In almost every facet of our daily lives music provides comfort, motivation, and encouragement, but it can also cause sadness, aggravation, and even violent behavior. Countless studies have been conducted over the years, and just as many theories have been developed. But the one thing that remains constant throughout, is that there is a definite correlation between how we as a society function with and without music and that it can have positive and negative effect both on our emotional and physical wellbeing. Music is used in many ways throughout the world. Not only is it for entertainment but it is also used to help heal the sick, hear the voices of those who are hurt and connect people together who have something in common. Teenagers are a group who identify with music and try to find their way through their tough years. Abused children can vocalize their feelings in order to get their thoughts out and free themselves from their hurt. Throughout history music has been a part of society. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (WHO). Not only does a person need to eat well and exercise to be healthy, they also need to be mentally and socially healthy. Music can improve a person’s mental and social well-being enhancing their own health. As we all tap to the beat of our favorite song and smile when it makes us feel good we are all doing what we need to do to become healthier people.
