Today, November 8, 1519, the much prophesized tragedy has come to claim the Mexica. Odd strangers they are, led by Quetzalcoatl, the god who provides nourishment to mortal beings. Together Quetzalcoatl and Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, are the sun and the moon and have arrived to initiate the final era of the universe, the Fifth Sun. Soon “cataclysmic earthquakes [will] destroy the earth and supernatural monsters [will] ravage human life” (Roark, 29). The deities are an assembly of strong fair skinned creatures, suited in radiant metal, mounted on beasts, and armed with glistening silver tools. The sun reflects off the soft skin of Quetzalcoatl’s soldiers. They are polite and well mannered, especially a warrior that calls himself Hernán Cortés. A young Tobasco girl, named Malinali, accompanies them and aids us in communicating with the deities. She must be half divine to be able to speak the language of the gods and the language of men. A few tribal subordinates carry their food and supplies. They wear helmets that cover their entire head and only their eyes shine through a silver rim. The deities do not relax their attire and maintain their bearing at all times. At their sides, they carry large knives that extend from their waist to below their knees. They possess large steel objects that when operated can make the sound of thunder and flash like lightning. Some of the soldiers clutch tall sticks that are much like long arrows but with metal heads. The greatest of all their possessions is the massive black device that is used along with a ball and fire. It makes a load roar and can destroy an entire village. All their tools are a great threat to the Mexica but they seem to desire a peaceful relationship which Montezuma favors as
