There are thousands of individuals who commit very serious crimes daily and get caught for their actions. They are punished and many are sent to prisons for an extended period of time and upon their release they have to be assigned a Parole officer. Some believe that after been in prison for his or her action they are rehabilitated and on the right track but some still need some guidance. That’s where the job of a parole officer steps in. While the United States often boasts of the prison system being one that rehabilitates prisoners often after release supervision is needed. Strong written, verbal and listening skills are well needed. Parole officers provide supervision and documentation of everything are necessary. These documentations can be used in court hearings and therapy sessions. Here these documents must be carefully and competently composed. It is important for parole officers to have superb verbal skills in order to interact with co-workers, attorneys, judges and other people involved in the case. While it may not seem important to care what the needs of the parolee are, they are essential. The officer cannot help an individual if they do not know what they need. Because of my background in the military I feel that I have excellent speaking and listening skills. On the other hand, I am certain that I need to improve my written skills. Similar to most jobs today the most important technologies used in this career path are the computer and telephone. Many parole officers are moving toward using laptops because they are on the go and laptops are portable. The telephone or cell phone is also important in order to contact the parolee, court personnel, and family members of the parolee. I consider myself proficient with both the telephone and computers alike. Being successful at this career comes with experience.
