The Importance of Nursing Research
The history of nursing research can be dated back as early as the 1800’s with the famous British Nurse Florence Nightingale who felt a clean environment promoted physical and mental health for patients. Nightingale’s research had a significant change in the community by improving sanitation and decreasing mortality (Grove, 2003, p. 9). Nursing research plays a significant role for the improvement of the health care profession as a whole. Research decides and manages the fundamentals of the nursing practice. The vision for nursing in the twenty-first century was to develop a scientific knowledge base that could promote health and prevention of illnesses (Grove, 2003, p. 13). Quantitative and qualitative research are two main areas of research which are applicable to the nursing profession. Quantitative research is based on the results in nursing by testing controlled trial settings, whereas qualitative research is based on quality issues experienced by a patient(LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2010, p. 8). As stated in the American Association of College of nursing, “Nursing research worldwide is committed to rigorous scientific inquiry that provides a significant body of knowledge to advance nursing practice, shape health policy, and impact the health of people in all countries”(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2013, para. 1).
Nursing research assists in understanding the importance of prevention, slowing the progression of a disease, or in some cases, leading to a possible cure. In 1946, the federal government established the Division of Nursing through the Office of the Surgeon General and Public Health Services.
