Lieberman’s point is that fairy tales make beauty the basis for which reward is given, not intelligence, work ethic, or anything else a radical feminist would see as an asset. Lieberman also stresses that in popular fairy tales, beauty is associated with being kind and well-tempered whereas ugliness is associated with being ill-tempered and often jealous. This can be easily shown in one of the most popular fairy tales of all—Cinderella. In this, Lieberman argues, Cinderella is oppressed by her cruel, ugly stepsisters and stepmother who force the kind, beautiful girl to do all the chores in the house. Cinderella ends up getting the prize (marriage to the prince) based on looks alone.
In this story Panttaja says it is both mothers that are wicked. Panttaja states the real mother “plots and schemes, and she wins” (Panttaja 660) when it comes to fulfilling the wishes of Ashputtle. But actually the two mothers have the same goal in mind; to have their daughters married off and have a joyful life. To be able to do this, the real mother puts a charm on the prince to make him fall in love with Ashputtle instead of anyone else. The prince did not dance with anyone else all night and would always say “she is my partner” (Grimm 630).
The fact that most fail to realize, as pointed by the author, is that these two mothers want the same things: they both want the best future for their daughters, and both mothers are willing to do anything to ensure that it happens. It is, however, Cinderella’s mother who surpasses and comes in first place. Panttaja believes Cinderella succeeds in winning the prince’s hand at the ball not because of the goodness of her character, but because she was able to stay loyal to her mother. By doing this her mother rewards her by giving her the most beautiful appearance in the entire kingdom. Cinderella succeeds through her mother’s magic, deceit, lies, and disguises.
Another strong theme is the conflict between good and evil. In most cases, good and evil show the same characteristics and Wicked certainly holds a lot of these characteristics, but at the same time, it shows the audience that evil may come from many unexpected sources. Abigail and Elizabeth stand out the most because of their role in the witch trails. Abigail Williams is the niece of Reverend Parris. She once was the servant for the Proctors but was fired by Elizabeth because she discovered that Abigail was having an affair with her husband, John Proctor. Abigail is a smart, wily, good liar, and vindictive when crossed. She is clearly the Villain of the play because she manipulated her friends and lied to the whole town.
Maybe she has the most privileged lifestyle or she is the prettiest but there is a dominating factor that shows her as inferior to others. For example, in the movie Mean Girls, there is a pack of girls called “the plastics” and their alpha is Regina George, who recruits a new girl named Cady and makes her over into the newest member of the clique. The other girls that are a part of the clique are all fearing of Regina because she is pretty, rich and fits the ideal white high school female. “She’s the queen B- the other two are just her little workers.” (Mean Girls). Gretchen and Karen are Regina’s faithful minions who will do whatever it takes to stay in her good graces.
Is Abigail Williams a Victim or Villain? We have been studying the text The Crucible by Author Miller and I am going to study in detail weather Abigail Williams is a victim, or truly the villain. Abby is the villain and some may put it down to some of the "reddish work" she has seen but is it? In Act One Abigail is willing to lie to everyone to save her own, Abby is certain "[they] danced" and nothing else, even though we know that is not all they did. Abby threatens the girls, forcing them to tell the story according to the way which incriminates her the least.
