In chapter 11 of the book Sisters in the Struggle edited by Bettye Collier-Thomas and V.P. Franklin, the contributing author Cynthia Fleming uses the life experience of Ruby Doris Smith Robinson to detail women’s role in the Black Panther movement. Ruby Doris Smith-Robinson is introduced to the reader as a strong black woman whose role within the black power movement became public example to the involvement that most women played in the struggle for equal rights. Fleming essay of this prominent SNCC leader demonstrates the increasing militant role that is bestowed upon women of the era. Fleming uses Robinson’s story to deconstruct claims by male Black Power advocates that women in the movement were just doing a “man’s job”.
Mary was the first black women appointed to the Board of Education, she became the first president of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, and she was the first women president of the Bethel Literary and Historical Society. Mary speaks about the trials and tribulations African Americans had to endure during the early 1900’s, and how situations continue to worsen as time goes on. In her speech she goes on to make references how colored people are not being treated fairly and with dignity she believes they deserve. She makes it easy for her listeners to understand these injustices by referencing topics her audience can relate to. Her story about how a young colored women was turned away from a job just because the color of her skin can be linked with how women with higher capabilities than their male counterparts are still not receiving the position.
Angry whites in the South during this period of time would go to any measure to satisfy their hate for an individual of a different race. Rosaleen really changes during this trial; she becomes bitter towards whites, even towards Lily, whom she is close to. Continuing on page 52 Rosaleen learns about the black Madonna. “If Jesus’ mother is black, how come we only know about the white Mary?” The quote is what Rosaleen was thinking when she saw the picture Lily had found in her mother’s items. This is not just a picture of a black version of Mary; it is a picture of the African American’s gaining their rightful freedoms in 1964.
Audre Lorde’s essay “Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women redefining Difference” tackles many different issues that we have in society. She discusses how women are seen as being inferior due to there age, race, class, and sex. She notes the oppression that women have endured, especially Black women, and illustrates the difficulties that women face in society. Lorde’s claims that black women are oppressed in two ways: because they are Black and because they are women. In this essay, ).
In Warriors Don’t Cry the hatred of the blacks towards whites is very apparent from the beginning to the end of the novel. Melba and the other Little Rock 9 were repeatedly physically and verbally abused throughout their time at Central High School just because they were black. These actions were repeated throughout the nation some even went as far as killing people for their color of their skin. The main reason for this hatred was because the lower and middle class whites had people they were better then no matter what was happening at that point in their lives. They felt that if African-Americans were given equal rights they would be better than them and that was something they couldn’t let

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, women felt discriminated against by men and by most of society. Men generally held discriminatory and stereotypical views of women, which made many women dissatisfied with their lives and made them, feel their lives were unfulfilled and spinning out of control. Discrimination spurred women to take action. Women began to revolt, they began expressing the feelings they had bottled up inside all along. Kate Chopin wrote The Awakening, which helped other women to know they were not alone.
Throughout the history of America, being sexually exploited has become a standard for black women. Sexually exploiting black woman started with the arrival of black people from Africa for enslavement and has continued to current times. Although the sexual exploitation of black women started with blatant racism, it has since then turned into an ambiguous movie or music video. Amazingly current black culture has adopted this racially prejudice view of black women. The beginning of the history of black women in America started with slavery and sexual exploitation.
