According to The Social Security Bulletin (2003/2004) Baby Boomer retirees will be better off than the current or near-term retirees. The fact of the Baby Boomer generation having higher education and degrees plus remaining in the workforce for longer contributes to higher life time earnings. The Family income at age 67 is projected to be higher for Baby Boomer retirees the for current retirees, per capita family income at age 67 will increase from about $29,000 for current retirees to $44,000 for early baby boomers. According to Divorce Rate, “between the ages of 20 to 29 the divorce rate is greater than couples 30 and older.” Some statistics say at least 66 percent of younger couples end up divorced because of childless issues. The only thing that tends to hold the marriage together would be love. Yet, some say that love tends to fade. While others say the contrary. Couples that have children tend to have a lower divorce rate.
A reason in particular that nuclear families are no longer the norm is that, divorce rate has increased. Research shows that now 40% of marriages now end in divorce. This leads to lone-parent families and re-constituted families. However, a sociologist may also argue that nuclear families are still by far the most common type of family in Britain and therefore are the ‘norm’. Secondly, feminism is another reason that some people believe that nuclear families are no longer the norm.
Cain uses inductive reasoning when she quotes “According to the U.S Census Bureau, in 1993 there were 34.9 million American families that were childless and only 33.3 million families with a child under the age of 18 (488).” Cain uses this example to prove to the reader that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of childless women over the past 30 years. Cain also uses deductive reasoning throughout her essay. For example, Cain quotes David Pearce Snyder from The Futurist Magazine “Our reasons for having children have changed over time. Whereas in earlier days children were needed to support a family, social safety nets have taken care of those needs (489).” By quoting another person, Cain shows the reader that the principle of her claim is also accepted by other people. Cain convinces the reader that not only she believes what she is arguing, but others also believe the same
Every day more people die in America than are born. Any increases in population since 1972 have been due to immigration.2 The sociological perils we face are not those of population explosion, but population reduction. The Population Research Institute agrees, and concluded, “Our long-term problem is not too many children, but too few children.”3 The legalization of abortion resulted in a drastic reduction of the number of children in this country. By 1980 there were 6.5 million fewer school-age children in America than just a decade earlier. This required the closing of nine-thousand elementary schools.4 Legalized abortion has resulted in over 46 million fewer taxpayers in America to support the elderly.
This is added to costs for advanced health care. Many feel that this will increase taxes, even causing some to not work because of how much they will have to pay to social security, putting an even further gap between the working and the elderly. We are often left with the question, what about us when we become elderly? When we reach elderly age, the elderly population will almost be doubled, and the working taxpayer percentages will be lower due to infertility, who
Thirty percent of teenage girls who have dropped out of school listed pregnancy or parenthood as the primary reason (“Teen Pregnancy Prevention”, n.d.). That percentage does not seem as high as some people think, but what kind of jobs can these females hold without a diploma or GED? Only 40 percent of teen moms finish high school (“Teen Pregnancy Prevention,” n.d.). It is understandable on why these girls do not finish high school, but it is extremely crucial that they
If we do nothing to the current configuration of our Social Security program, projections are showing that by the year 2035, the Trust Fund will only adequately support 75% of beneficiaries. (Goss, 2010) This is in large part due to the current generation of baby boomers who are living longer, more healthful and active lives. When they start collecting Social Security benefits, they will collect for more years than previous generations. Although Social Security benefits account for approximately 40% of prior earnings for an individual who has worked, this would be a substantial amount of earnings to lose. For the economy, the challenge is to generate growth and financial resources needed to meet age-related spending needs.
Raul Hinojosa pointed out that the reason behind the welfare increase among the majority of newly-legalized immigrants would be due to their low education and income level and not an unwillingness to work (2). The 2006 law initiative S. 2621 would have legalized approximately seven million unauthorized immigrants. The study done by the Immigration Policy Center confirms that immigrants who were legalized in 1986 under the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) had an average increase of 15 percent in their hourly wage after five years (sec. 4). This means that the legalized immigrants pay more in federal and state income taxes; in addition, because they have greater income, they also use more services and buy more goods from a wider range of businesses, which will ultimately result in the
Low-income individuals and families must spend money on the same necessities required by higher-income people (Meehan). However, after the necessities are purchased, the poorer taxpayers, because they earn less, will have less money left over to pay taxes, at the same rate as those earning higher income amounts (Meehan). Implementing a flat tax system could dismantle the IRS (Meehan). Many view the IRS as an imposing, intimidating arm of government; however, this institution employs numerous people who were trained to work in the tax industry. IRS employees would most likely lose their jobs under a flat tax system (Meehan).
