THE AZTEC EMPIRE: A SHORT INTRODUCTION Located in the central highlands at an altitude of about 7,000 feet is the Valley of Mexico.[1] At the base of this large valley was a large lake by the name of Lake Texcoco. Lake Texcoco was located at the valley’s lowest point and made life in the mostly dry country sustainable. It was in this area that the Aztec empire was established. The Aztecs are thought to have originated in northern Mexico. They were a nomadic tribe, arriving in Mesoamerica at the start of the 14th century.[2] Even before the Aztecs had ever stepped foot in the Valley of Mexico the area had been witness to the rise and fall of a number of different tribal groups before them including the Maya and the Toltec.[3]…show more content…
