02-02-2012 Smarthinking rough draft English 1010 Hate Crime My husband and I lived in a very rural community as we were expecting the birth of our first child. We had speculations that some of our neighbors didn’t agree with an interracial couple moving into their community, and over the next several months we realized that what we had feared the most was true. A few examples of racism that stick out in my mind the most occurred shortly after my first bi-racial child’s birth On several different occasions we would be coming home and a car would whip out behind us driving fast and would ride our bumper. The driver of the car was driving like they had an emergency and needed to pass. We would slow down to wave the car to pass
In the story “Let it Snow” by David Sedaris the first person character talks about how snow was a regular thing in winter when he lived in New York, but when he moved to North Carolina it rarely snowed. He recalls when he was in fifth grade that it snowed so much that school was canceled for several days. He goes on to say that his mother had a breakdown and kicked them out of the house, without letting them back in or even acknowledging them. They were so desperate to get back into the house that they came up with a plan to have their little sister get hit by a car so their mother would feel bad about herself and not treat them badly anymore. A neighbor found out what they were doing and informed the mother.
Walk Two Moons This is the story of thirteen-year-old named Salamanca Tree Hiddle whose parents separated. She lived in Bybanks, Kentucky, which had lots of grass and was near the Ohio River. Her father then decided to move into town, so he packed everything they owned, except for her chestnut tree, the willow, the maple the hayloft, or the swimming hole that were really belonged to her. They drove three hundred miles north and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio. She didn’t like it because it had no trees and in front of ever house was a little square of grass.
She’s had plenty of opportunities to, but she never did. Why would she all of sudden decide to do it?” Harries nodded his head, “You make a good point. About losing Kylee at the bonfire, where was the last place you saw her and when?” “It was just starting to get dark outside, so I’d say around 8. I saw her going to the parking lot with Jeremy and Lola. They met up with these two men.
Since it was such a long drive, Kathy had to pull over at night so they could get some sleep. Once they arrived at her family’s, the power was out an other members of her family were their so it was very crowded. While Zeitoun was back home all of their properties flooded and Zeitoun went to jail. He hadn’t heard from his family and they didn’t know where his was for weeks. Eventually, everyone was back together again after such a long journey.
They saddled up again and rode out now feeling very heavy hearted. It took them about thirty minutes to get to the houses. When they got to the house, Slim and Curly jumped off their horses first and ran quickly through the door. They were scared about what they might find but knew they needed to find out. Their worst fears came true.

Mayday Hills Bold: emphasized words Green: scared voice Italics: fast pace My four friends and I arrive at the Mayday Hills lunatic asylum driveway at approximately 8pm, I start to feel a bit anxious. I didn’t think Joel and Sam would actually want to go in, but now(emphasized and scared), Joanna and I can’t find the boys. They ran up to the front entrance to have a look but never came back. Joanna and I decided we were going to go inside, find them and go. As Joanna and I walk up to the house, we hear eerie noises.
Say No To Distracted Driving Ashworth College May 23, 2015 It was nearly four years ago that I almost lost my uncle. I remember the call so clearly, “honey, there’s been an accident, and Uncle Jim isn’t doing well.” I instantly thought to myself, “I knew his excessive drinking would kill him eventually, I just didn’t think it would be so soon.” My mom proceeded to say, “we don’t know all of the details right now, but the police believe he was on the phone at the time of the accident. He went off the road, and wrapped his car around a tree. He’s being airlifted to the hospital now. It’s not looking good.” It took me a minute to process what she had said, but I quickly realized that I wasn’t losing my uncle to his drinking addiction; I
This description situates Maycomb in the reader’s mind as a sleepy Southern town; Scout even calls it “tired.” However this changes in chapter 8 as Scout recalls what Atticus said “we had two weeks of the coldest weather since 1885” Maycomb has suddenly become bitter and frozen. Maycomb is a close town where everybody knows everything about anybody who lives in Maycomb, except The Radley’s, where in chapter 8 Mrs. Radley dies, but no one really
