Teeth whitening Have you ever wanted a white, attention grabbing, perfect smile? It’s been an estimated amount of over ten million Americans that will spend billions of dollars on tooth whitening products and procedures every year. Tooth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure which is done to improve the overall appearance of the tooth, but it is not safe or effective for everyone. Teeth come in many colors, some have a yellowish tone, some orange, some brown, and gray. The outside of your teeth (enamel) is clear. To whiten teeth a peroxide type chemical can be applied. Both the character of the teeth and the whitening technique used determines how long it will take for your teeth to whiten, and how long it will last. There are several different types of teeth whitening procedures such as in office bleaching, laser bleaching, and over the counter teeth whitening. Not everyone can use tooth whitening solution. Circumstances that may prevent the use of tooth whitening product is patients with decaying teeth, infected gums, white spots on their teeth and multiple tooth colored fillings or crowns on the front of the teeth may not be good candidates for teeth whitening. Teeth that have restorations such as veneers or having been bonded with white fillings cannot be whitened. These materials do not whiten past the color of these types of restorations that were determined by the surrounding teeth. Teeth that have internal (intrinsic) stains my not be affected as well. Tetracycline which is an antibacterial medication can also cause teeth stains and fluorosis. Teeth with a yellow hue and not brown or gray will produce best results.
