What is the relation of technology to innovation? We begin by defining both technology and innovation. Then we proceed by discussing the paradigms of innovation to give us different perspectives of innovation. Next we will tackle how Social Shaping of Technology. Then we take a look at how some authors view the role of technology in innovations. Finally, we conclude the relationship of technology to innovation. Technology is defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. This may come in the form of machine or equipment, raw materials, or processes. It comes from two Greek words, techne and logos. Techne means art, skill, craft, or the way, manner, or means by which a thing is gained. Logos means word, the utterance by which inward thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression. So, literally, technology means words or discourse about the way things are gained. As a process, technology is the rational process of creating order and transforming a material or information to realize certain ends. As an object, it is the set of tools, devices, systems, methods, or procedures created by the technological process. As a knowledge, it consists of facts and procedures to manipulate matter, energy, and information, along with how to discover new means for such transformations. In business terms, it is the application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities. It is generally divided into five categories: tangible, intangible, high, intermediate, and low. Innovation is defined as a new idea, more effective device or process. Innovation can be viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulated needs, or existing market needs (Wikipedia).
