Duavata “The Journey” Abby Young Documentary Proposal BCM200 Research and Project Models Bachelor of Film Production SAE Institute Sydney Image 1: Duavata Fiji Dance Group Table of Contents Introduction Pre-Production Introduction “Duavata” is a Fijian word, “dua” meaning one and “vata” meaning together, together meaning “coming together” (Vuicakau, 2012). “Duavata- The Journey” is proposed to serve as an observational and participatory documentary, highlighting Duavata (Fijian Dance group) and their display of the Fijian culture shown through the practice and performance of the ‘meke’. The group was formed by a few Fijian youths who started out performing for church functions. They have now become an independent dance group, still in its beginning stages of recruiting dancers, developing choreography, sourcing traditional costumes and props. They have been selected to represent the Fijian community by performing in an upcoming reggae concert featuring Pacific artists such as George “Fiji” Veikoso, Lukie D and Spawnbreezie.
