Suicide has been an issue among all ages, especially among elderly. According to World Health Organization (WHO), approximate one million people die by suicide in the world every year, and global suicide rate among elderly people is three time higher than the rate among youth (Wasserman 2011). However, it is more understandable that suicide rate among old aged people is higher, because elderly people may suffering from physical and mental illness which is more likely to result in suicide. But there are still risk factors and warning signs that we can recognized to prevent the tragic event from happening. Furthermore, once an elderly person is recognized as at risk for suicide, various of treatment can be provided on time.

Discuss the function of research in a chosen area of interests Is there link between dementia and depression? In this task I'm going to analyse the link between depression and dementia, what impact have it on peoples lives such as quality of life and what is the function of research in this area. People who have significant depression are more likely to develop depression further in life as well people with dementia who suffer from depression. If it’s left untreated it makes them even more confused and forgetful which affect quality of of life even more. The research in this particularly
To further examine the data the utilitarian ethics approach will be used. It is important to remember that utilitarian ethics considers the consequences of actions. Indentify the Problem: Assisted suicide is it ethical or unethical? Is it right for a physician to assist a patient to kill themselves? This is the main focus of assisted suicide and the justification of the situation has been at debate for a long time.
They will have to retire from their jobs, which could result in the loss of social contacts. The loss of a loved one is devastating for older adults, also. These factors and others may lead to depression. “Depression has been defined as, hopelessness, helplessness, anxiety symptoms, memory complaints; loss of pleasure, slowed movements, irritability and loss of interest in personal care” (Goncalves, Albuquergue, Byrne, & Pachana, 2009. p.610). Depression could potentially reduce the quality of life and possibly increase medical morbidity and mortality in older adults.
Sinae Boudreaux March 14, 2013 Reflective Paper: Suicide Suicide is the act of taking one’s own life on purpose. Suicidal behavior is any action that could cause a person to die. Suicidal behaviors occur when there is a situation or event that the individual find overwhelming. People with bipolar disorder, depression, drug or alcohol dependence, or even stressful life issues can be vulnerable to suicide or suicidal behaviors. Individuals who try to commit suicide wish they could just disappear away from life situations that seem impossible to deal with.
Some of the criticism is part of a larger body of criticism of pathways and guidelines in general. Some critics believe that pathways undermine individualised care and remove the ability of clinicians to make small changes in patient care (Palmer 2008, Rycroft-Malone et al 2008). For more information on this debate, refer to the discussion in Kennedy et al (2009). Some of the criticism of end of life care pathways relates to law and ethics. In particular, critics state that diagnosing death and putting people on end of life care pathways is a form of euthanasia – one newspaper story featured the headline ‘Sentenced to death on the NHS’ (Devlin 2009).
In police culture, it is more powerfully stigmatized and viewed as a “coward’s way out” (Dahl, 2010). Dr. John Violanti highlights this perspective: "...police officers traditionally subscribe to a myth of indestructibility; they view suicide as particularly disgraceful to the victim officer and to the profession" (1995). What are the facts, impediments to treatment, and potential warning signs of police officer suicide? What is being done in our police departments to address this issue? What are potential solutions?
It can also have harmful effects on the course and outcome of common chronic conditions, such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, and obesity. According to the National Institution of Mental Health, depression can also be a major risk factor for suicide. (NIMH 2007) Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the consequences that depression may have on a student, as it may not only affects a student's current health condition, but may also result in a student having suicidal thoughts. According to the CDC 2009 report on the twenty leading causes of death among those of age 10 or above, suicide is ranked as the tenth leading cause of death in the Unites States, accounting for 36,891 deaths (CDC 2009). In a more narrow and specific research, the National Institution of Mental Health reported that suicide was the third leading cause of death among youth ages 15 to 24 in 2007 (NIMH 2007).
