Jessie Riley Stop the Madness: The Dangers of Synthetic Biology and Genetic Engineering I had never even heard of synthetic biology until I was assigned to read about it in Rhetoric and Composition II class. The first impression that I had was that I was reading something out of a science fiction magazine; it all seemed so very fantastical and even frightening to me. They say that ignorance is bliss, and I must admit that I would have preferred ignorance to enlightenment in regards to what scientists and leading experts in the fields are hypothesizing synthetic biology and genetic engineering are capable of. In fact, the more I read, the more frightened I became. So many questions in regards to the potential benefits of this research were left unanswered, and all I could focus on were the many, drastic and terrifying dangers that such breakthroughs in the fields could pose. By the time I had finished reading Bill Joy's article, "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us" I had made up my mind. Any further research in genetic engineering, nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and robotics poses too great a threat to our environment, ourselves, and our world itself to be allowed to continue. I am not the only one concerned, Stephan Herrera, who wrote the article “Preparing the World for Synthetic Biology” states that there are legitimate concerns in regards to synthetic biology. (Herrera1). Also two sociologists from King's College in London, Claire Marris and Nikolas Rose discuss the pros and cons of synthetic biology in their article, “Let's Get Real on Synthetic Biology” Marris and Rose state that the implications of synthetic biology are “EXCITING but terrifying” (Marris and Rose 1). In “Synthetic Biology: The Best Hope for Mankind's Future?” Johnjoe McFadden says that although much good can come from synthetic biology many people still have reservations, especially
