Alfonza McKeever Brother Bill 442-02 Economics 3 January 2011 Squinkies Essay There are many things that contributed to the success of Squinkies. Firstly, Bill Nichols predicted that the economy was still shaky during the holiday season that a bargain-priced plastic toy would take off. This brought a great deal of good fortune to his company. Another aspect that was beneficial to Blip Toys was that Bill studied the toys of other companies, such as Beanie Babies and Zhu Zhu Pets. One aspect of Squinkies that made them so popular was the fact that they were collectible and cheaper than most toys on the market. A 16-pack of Squinkies sells for 10 dollars. Another beneficial aspect that contributed to Squinkies’ success was that they came in attractive round plastic bubbles, as a vending-machine would dispense. Nichols heard that vending-machine concepts were popular in its Japanese division. When Nichols expanded the line with sets of boys based characters like Spiderman and new dolls based on Barbie and Hello Kitty, Squinkies revenue increases even more. Bill’s idea of making toys that were squishy rubber characters about the size of a knuckle made Squinkies a sought after item by many consumers. In addition, the fact that Squinkies could be manufactured for a low price in China also benefited the budget of Blip Toys. This gave the company more money to reinvest in more Squinkies to sell. Lastly, Squinkies was such successful toy, because the recommended age of the toys was 4 and up. This eliminated any risk of chocking hazards, recalls, or lawsuits. “I affirm that I did not give or receive any unauthorized assistance on this assignment.”
