Possessing a sociological imagination allows us the ability to look beyond our local environment and personality to a wider social structure. C. Wright Mills describes sociological imagination as the ability to imagine and understand the intersection between our personal biography and historical social structures. With this new understanding, I began to notice the daily choices I make. From the classes that I take, the sports I participate in, the way I dress, the music I enjoy and the group of people I associate with. These are all somehow affected by public issues and what society tends to make us believe is right. My life has been affected by various social events. I can think of three key events around the time of my birth in 1984 that have helped to shape my beliefs and actions. One key event was the debut of the MTV network. Around the same time personal home computers were beginning to grow in popularity and the public was becoming increasingly concerned with environmental preservation. MTV (Music Television Network) debuted in 1981 changing the music industry and society almost immediately. The fledgling network created a 24-hour television station that aired 1,000 music videos in its first year. It was quickly embraced by young America as a number one source of information for the latest trends in music, fashion, and opinion. I consider myself to be a product of the MTV generation. My whole life I have tried to emulate the style and fashion that is popularized by musicians and celebrities. In many ways MTV has had a positive effect on my life by allowing me to easily stay current on pop culture, fashion trends and even the latest trendy slang.
