Mental illnesses also maybe a reason. Psychiatric disorders are sometimes associated with domestic violence like borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, among others. Social theories of domestic violence looks at the external factors in the offenders environment, such as family structure, stress, social learning & includes rational choice theories. The social learning theory could be a reason for domestic violence. The social learning theory(slt) believes that all behavior is learnt form experience(nurture) but we also learn through observation.
In psychology people such as Freud, Maslow and Rogers play an important role in understanding the self, whereas society can be explained by sociological figures such as Durkheim in sociology. The psychologist, Freud’s theory of personality suggests that our personality is structured by the interactions of our id, superego and ego. The id being our pleasure principle; it is the selfish part of our self and causes us to desire things such as food and sex. It is an unconscious part of our personality and present from birth. The superego is our morality principle which we develop from three to six years old, it helps us to define the difference between right and wrong and Freud suggested that it is often in conflict with the id.
Left realism is particularly useful in understanding crime and deviance because it avoids the age old divisions between structure and action. Instead, left realism sets out an agenda which contains all levels of analysis, both macro and micro. Young, Lea and Matthews for example, suggest that in order to truly understand and deal with crime, the interplay between macro and micro factors need to be considered alongside each other in what they call “the square of crime”. In essence, this means that when investigating the problem of crime, sociologists should consider the roles of the state (as they have the power to define what is criminal), the offender (i.e. what motivates them), the public (because they are an agent of informal social control, and fear of public stigmatisation is viewed as one of the most powerful determinants of behaviour) and most importantly, the victim, because it is ultimately the victim which decides whether a crime has occurred.
However evidence is presented there are strengths and limitations in whichever way the researcher presents their findings. This essay will focus on and discuss the strengths and limitations of case studies as a source of evidence for social injustice. A very common way for evidence to be presented is by way of personal testimonies of individuals experiencing the injustice, We can see in DVD 1 The Open University (2013) ‘Chapter3 Gated communities [Video clip], DD208 Welfare, crime and society.which focuses on exploring the issues relating to crime the feelings of those who live within the gated communities in relation to the way this made them feel safe, evaluating social exclusion and the vulnerability felt by the people in South Africa who used the gated communities. It also explored the feelings of those on the outside of the gated communities who felt social exclusion. The interviews in the DVD and the testimonies of people involved in the making of the DVD gave us, the viewer, an insight into the thoughts and opinions of both those who lived in the communities and those
Some states are now viewing domestic violence as a public health concern, in regards to domestic violence being a social disease. I am studying psychology at Ashford University and I have already taken Early Childhood Development. I can see how this could be viewed as a social disease. We learn from our parents, good and bad. You could view children becoming abusers themselves via Freud's ego and super ego theory, which it could be argued that in early development a child sees the way to get what they want and or need via coersion, violence, complaining, yelling, or how ever the child perceives the parent obtaining that which they want.
This paper will also look at possible racial, gender, and other variations in the family structure-delinquency relationship. Social disorganization theories found that delinquents that commit crimes are results of social issues like their family make up, economic status, discipline, parental deviance, and also child abuse. The concept was designed as an explanation of crime, delinquency, and other social problems. Some consider family to as being the foundation of the human society. I can agree with this because how a person acts with juvenile or adult, it starts in the home.
If not checked these behaviors accelerate into anti-social behavior directed towards other children and the community. Currently there is no information available as to the exact reason why being without a father affects these young males. Yet, the very fact that the child is without a father-figure in the home does affect the child’s psychological behavior. The child’s emotional development can not help but be affected by this. They may have feelings of loss or guilt about the father not being in the home.
The Social Learning Theory that is being used as a basis for this new policy is centered on the view that people learn bad or aggressive behaviors by witnessing other people who act aggressively in order to reach a particular goal or reward. While many social learning theorists understand that a person’s mental and physical characteristics can influence how violent they may be, it is believed that the environment they live in and what they witness or are subjected to in the home is a key factor behind their behavior. (Siegel, 2008). There is also the need to ensure that the child in question is not subjected to any more harmful or dangerous behavior by the adults in the home. Many studies show that the dangers of child abuse spread beyond harming the victim.
But there is a big difference between using physical punishment to discipline and physical abuse. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong, not to make them live in fear. However, it is impossible to know whether marital strife is a cause of child abuse, or if both the marital strife and the abuse are caused by tendencies in the abuser. Substance abuse can be a major contributing factor to child abuse. One U.S. study found that parents with documented substance abuse, most commonly alcohol, cocaine, and heroin, were much more likely to mistreat their children, and were also much more likely to reject court-ordered services and treatments (Besharov, 1990).
Many people do not believe drugs can be brought right to their door step. The drug trafficking statics will open the eyes of the men and women to see it could be right at your front door. Our children are our future so it is important
