Students: Chris Su Instructor: Mrs. Tico Tenorio EN111-01 01April2013 Should GCC’s Library Have a 24-Hour Study Room? Library is the best learning center in a school for students, because the environment is quiet and the information is well-organized. Students working for academic research need a place that includes a comfortable study area and conference rooms. In the quiet zone, students can concentrate on their studies; in conference rooms, they can have discussions with their fellows without noise. In Guam Community College (as GCC below), the library/student learning center does have these two facilities. However, the current operating hours are shorter than other community colleges or universities in the States. According to our survey result, most students think the GCC library should extend their current hours (Evangelista, Hope, Nicole Moreno, Jodie Muna, Ricky Santos, and Chris Su). To extend library hours will definitely meet two major obstacles which are security problems and budgetary problems. The first problem that I’ve mentioned is a serious issue about students’ safety. If the library will extend their hours, increasing numbers of security guards is a necessary action. Then it will come to budgetary problem, because the administrators will need to hire more securities and staffs who work for overnight shifts (Albanese 43). More than that, they need to pay additional bills of power. All of these problems gathered become a big rock stuck in between the achieving goals and reality. To make this great dream comes true, what we can do is take come possible ways to solve those problems. GCC library’s current hours are 9:00a.m.-8:00p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and 9:00a.m.-4:00p.m. on Friday (Guam). For security problem, the library can install card-key system which only allows registered students to get into the library after 8 p.m.;
