SME Anna Heerdt Grade 8 3/18/13 Music Project Scotland Scottish music dates back to nearly 2300 B.C. Scotland is well known for its traditional Folk music, which is still popular today. English, Irish, and Scottish music are very similar. There are many different forms of Folk music in Scotland. Ballads and laments are very popular in Scottish Folk music. Normally, they are sung by one singer with instruments in the background. Dance music in Scotland is played across the country at dances, balls, weddings and other times. Some of these dances are jigs, waltzes, and more. The usual band has six members, using one fiddle, two accordions, a piano or keyboard, and bass and drums. Scottish Folk music has a very long history. The first Scottish Folk songs were written by John Forbes in Aberdeen in 1662. It was called “Songs and Fancies: to Thre, Foure, or Five Partes, both Apt for Voices and Viols”. It contained 77 songs, 25 Scottish and the other ones were English. Most of the Scottish songs published were written by unknown people. There are many types of Scottish groups, such as, pipe bands, Fiddler’s rally, Folk Groups, Folk-Rock Groups, and Dance Bands. Some instruments are the fiddle, clarsach, bag pipes, and bodhran. Scotland has many dances. Some are the march, the struthspey, the reel, the waltz, and the jig. Stringed instrument have been known in Scotland from at least the Iron Age. The music of Scotland has stayed very traditional. It has influenced many forms of music. Scottland has many types of music. A pipe band is made up of bag pipes and drums. They usually play while marching. A fiddler’s rally is made up of a number of fiddles, or violins, that play traditional Scottish music. A folk group is made up of singers and instrumentalists who sing and play Scottish music.
