Sometimes people do not appreciate what they have in life. They take their life for granted, not understanding that their values might be taken away from them someday. These people usually are selfish, ignorant and their actions and words might be offensively insulting to the public around them. In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allan Poe uses specific examples of the insults made by Fortunato, which motivated Montresor to commit a murder. Among those insults are ignorance towards others opinions, disrespect to others family and superiority of ones status. The author describes Fortunato as a man with a social acknowledgement whose opinions were highly regarded, but the men himself was an ignorant person. Fortunato considered himself as a connoisseur of wine, a quality that made him proud. Poe writes “How?” said he. “Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible!” as if showing that Fortunato did not believe that a man like Montresor could have a pipe of the rare wine (15). Moreover, Fortunato thinks that even if Montresor had a pipe of Amontillado he himself would not be able to tell the difference, hence insulting the intelligence of Montresor. His self-assured thought, that he is the best among the wine connoisseurs, makes him ignorant to the opinions of other people. He disregards and neglects any suggestions made by Montressor that Luchesi might be a better person to differentiate the wines. “And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado” writes author showing that not only that Fortunato insulted Luchesi, he kind of laughed at Montesor for deciding to go to Luchesi for advice (15). When Montresor suggested that Fortunato had a cold and it would be better for him not to go to the vaults, Fortunato forcefully made Montresor take him there. “The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon.” writes Poe once again
