First the phototaxis experiment was conducted by placing five Armadillidium vulgare in each side of the petri dish for a total of ten in the overall created environment. With no other variances added to either side, one petri dish was covered with a black cloth and the other was left exposed to light. The apparatus was then left undisturbed for ten minutes. After the elapsed time, the result of each specimen’s orientation was recorded and pooled for all seven of the experimental environments. Results There were notable differences between each test.
8. Write a lab report for this experiment in the space provided. Variable | Hypothesized Effect | In the fridge | I don’t think that it will grow because it is too cold | On the window sill (lots of light) | I think that this seed will grow n problem | In a dark closet | Will not germinate because of no sunlight | Coffee table (minimum sunlight) | Will germinate but growth will be slow | On top fridge (moderate light, warm temp) | I think this will be the second tallest bean | In the bathroom (florescent light, hot temp) | No germination | Outside the window (cold temp, lots of light) | I think that the bean will freeze and will not germinate | Place in salt water (lots of light) | I think that the bean will germinate and will grow | Placed in tea (lots of light) | I think that this will grow very tall because of the caffeine in the tea | Placed in sugar water (lots of light) | I do not think that the sugar water will have an effect on the growth of the bean | *results were measured 10 days later Variable | Growth measured in centimeters/ largest growth | In the fridge | No germination | On the window sill

7. Record how many seeds germinate in each dish each day. Materials: 8 petri dishes, 8 pieces of filter paper, 80 little marvel pea seeds, 50 mL of distilled water, and 50 mL of each of the following NaCl solutions: 0.01%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% Analysis: The first day after watering our seeds none of them had germinated, but after the weekend passed seven seeds had germinated in the distilled solution. Three seeds germinated in the .1% solution and one germinated in the .01% solution. In the rest of the solutions none of the seeds had germinated.
4) Label this jar “Experimental”. 5) Cap both jars and put them on the windowsill (to get sunlight) right next to each other. 6) Do NOT feed the fish! 7) Wait for about two to three weeks, periodically making observations about what is happening inside the jars. Observations: 9/22 Control: - water in jar filled almost to the top; is completely clear, nothing in it but a few leaves from the plants o water is clean - guppy is orange and white, about 3 cm long with a “fan”

8. Then average the height of each cup. V. Data Chart: Cup Number Number of Seeds Number of Sprouts Average Height 1 1 1 24.70 cm 2 2 2 27.25 cm 3 4 4 27.50 cm 4 8 8 25.23 cm Graph: VI. Analysis From the data collected throughout conducting the Mung Beans Experiment, I can assume that mung beans grow better in areas more populated with other mung beans. The cup with only one mung bean seed in it produced the shortest plant of the four cups.
After a period of 7 days, the bags were opened and contents examined. Quantitative measurements, such as germination rate and length of visible root growth were recorded along with qualitative observations like color, smell and presence of mold or fungus on the seedlings. There was insignificant or no growth in seedlings germinated in the highest salt surroundings, moderate to high growth in midline concentrations and an unexpectedly low rate of growth and root length observed in the control group, which were saturated in salt-free solution. INTRODUCTION The objective of the investigation was to observe and interpret the effects of increased concentrations of salinity on the earliest growth phases of Phaseolus vulgaris, the common bean, using pre-determined controls and variables. “Phaseolus is an American genus of approximately 40 species, mainly distributed in the tropics and subtropics” (Bayuelo-Jimenez et al., 2002).
Next I placed each of the slides under the microscope from day zero and viewed how many cells were present for each sample. Since each slide held only .5 mL I multiplied by two since the chart called to measure by a full mL. After day one of viewing each type I did the same thing over until I reached day 16 to observe what had taken place. C1: The table of results and graph representing personal results obtained in the experiment show that the mean no. of yeast cells per mm3 in a glucose respiratory substrate are 4 x 10, whereas the mean no of cells in sucrose substrate are 1 x 10. In comparison, the average class results indicate that the mean no. of yast cells per mm3 in glucose solution is 7.5 x 10, whereas for the sucrose solution the mean no. is 1.7 x 10.
