Pros and cons of Substance Abuse Dawn Provance HMSV: 220 January 1, 2013 There are many pros and cons of substance abuse, alcoholism and drug abuse can be considered a brain disease, many people don’t realize that addiction is a disease that affects the brain, stopping substance abuse is not just a power of willpower. When people get addicted to drugs or alcohol they can have a lot of serious problems. Overtime drugs and alcohol can cause changes to the brain and can affect a person’s self-control. This can make it hard to make good decisions about are self. Addiction can be like diabetes or asthma, if you have one of these dieses it can’t be cured, you would have to learn how to handle it so it does not cause problems. The pros of substance abuse can be good for some people, such as drinking a glass a wine, for healthy people, this can be good for their health to decrease the risk of getting heart disease, decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes, reduce blood pressure and can also raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol. There are other pros for substance abuse such as relaxation, just to have fun. Maybe they might like the taste or even to increase sociability and also to increase assertiveness. Some people are shy and by using substances such as drugs and alcohol can help them not be nervous to talk or socialize better. There are also many cons of substance abuse, if abused it can cause increased risk of cancer in the mouth, breast, among others. Substance abuse can also reduce nutrient absorption, lower inhibitions leading to high risk behaviors such as unprotected sex or drinking and driving. People also tend to do things they wouldn’t normally do in a sober environment, they can murder or assault somebody without even knowing what they have done or don’t remember. It can also make use have poor decision makings through misperceptions of our own
