Professional Values and Ethics Team University of Phoenix Gen200/Foundations For General Education And Professional Mrs. Myra Snipes April 21, 2010 Professional Values and Ethics There is a correlation between professional values, ethics and career success. When companies set code of conduct standards, employees are expected to adhere to the guidelines which can affect career success. What may differ between companies is how values and ethics are defined. In order to understand the correlation, one must define values and ethics. Also, explore the relationship between values and ethics by researching the practices of different companies. After defining the terms and understanding the relationship, one can begin to see a correlation between professional values, ethics, and career success. According to Syque (2002-2010), “values are the rules by which we make decisions about right and wrong, should and shouldn't, good and bad” (Values, para. 1). When representing a company, people should make decisions that adhere to the company’s values. Also according to Syque (2002-2010), ethics is “a formal system or set of rules which are explicitly adopted by a group of people” (Values, para. 1). People are also expected to represent their company ethically. Companies provide employees with values and ethics guidelines that will maintain its integrity. Each company have adopted their own system of providing and enforcing their code of conduct standards. Most employers make new and existing employees sign a code of conduct. Guidelines include information security (i.e. company practices and customer information). Guidelines on how you should conduct yourself on the internet, with customers and in the office with co workers.
