”The Road” by Cormac McCarthy What is left when everything you know has been destroyed and made into ashes? This is not the proper question to ask. The important question is; what will keep you going? When everything around you is crumbling away and you are left with nothing but yourself, and if you are lucky, some of your must beloved, you must keep going. Keep going to survive. Keep going for the sake of hopefulness. Keep going for your loved ones. What is there to find in such world? What precious thing is worth holding on too? The relationship between a father and a son. The boy has an endless will to do the right thing, which seems to be what the father has been teaching the boy on their long journey. The boy asks several times if they are still carrying the fire and if others might do the same, like in the end where the father convinces the boy to go on without him, like in the end where the father convinces the boy to go on without him, because he is about to die: “I want to be with you. You cant. Please. You cant. You have to carry the fire.” The boy works as a symbol if the fire they carry. “Is it real? The fire? Yes it is Where is it? I dont know where it is. Yes you do. It's inside you. It was always there. I can see it.” The boy’s definition of carrying the fire seems to be if you are “good or bad”, which is very important to him: “I dont know what to do. I think you should come with me. Are you one of the good guys?” Even though the boy is all alone and aware that he will probably die if his lonely situation remains, it is still important to him to make sure that he is on the good side. The boy's opposite of carrying the fire and being “one of the good people”, is eating people: “And you didnt eat them. No. You dont eat
