The History of Phlebotomy (Phlebotomists) Jennifer Johnson Missouri College The act of drawing blood from a patient’s veins, arteries, or capillaries for laboratory collection or blood transfusion, is called phlebotomy. This is done by making a small puncture in the body with a needle. Collecting urine and feces samples to detect blood is also done by phlebotomist. Phlebotomy began in the eighteenth century, but up until the mid nineteenth century it was called blood-letting. “Phlebotomy technology has made huge strides in its history overall, and the latter half of the twentieth century and first decade of the twenty first century has seen it evolve into an ever more refined, well controlled, and comfortable experience for the phlebotomist
