“A Walking Storybook” “One time I was in a Croatian town, which was under siege by Federal Yugoslav troops. We’d taken shelter there with the rest of the population who were being shelled. I asked one of the nurses if any babies had been born. When she opened the oven and pulled out a lasagna tray with three newborns alive, I looked at them and felt the tears coming. I excused myself, went to the toilet, and wept.” These are the words of the renowned Peter Cave. Being one of the ABC's most experienced foreign correspondents - he has reported from more than 50 countries during a career with the ABC spanning more than 35 years. He grew up in Waratah as one of four children (including my dad) of Frederick David and Betty Cave. His father was an industrial galvaniser and his mother was a nurse. At 18 he gained a cadetship with the then Australian Broadcasting Commission in Sydney. By 1974 he was working for Radio 2GB when he was flown-in to Darwin to cover the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy. Later he re-joined the ABC where one of his first major assignments was the Coconut War in The New Hebrides. His first overseas posting was to Japan in 1983. He then became the chief correspondent for Europe and the Middle East based in London and then bureau chief in Washington. He returned to Australia to be the presenter of AM (ABC Radio) before his current appointment. I asked Peter to sum up his professional life, and he answered “I have been fortunate… privileged even to have seen history unfold at close quarters.” When finally asking Peter what his greatest accomplishment in life was, his response to me was “Bringing up my two wonderful sons to be young men I am so very proud of, and so fortunate to have.” Peter Cave is a great man, who inspires myself and thousands of others around the globe to open their eyes to what goes on in the world.
