However, most men have a higher percentage of sustaining head injuries than women. It is also estimated that nearly one-half million people in the United States suffer from head injuries; many of those head injuries will turn out to be PTSD complaints. PTSD has been previously studied in cases involving only soldiers, now civilian personnel are being evaluated due to terror attacks, accidents, natural and civilian catastrophes, criminal assaults, and rape Strangely, PTSD was not developed until after the Vietnam War. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), PTSD has also been called shell shock or battle fatigue syndrome. The three major categories of PTSD are: (1) Intrusion, (2) Avoidance, and (3)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Introduction A common yet often misunderstood condition, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be described as “an extreme debilitating response to a traumatic event that overwhelms the mind and emotions”. (“Introduction,” 1998) Any number of traumatic events can cause PTSD, including kidnapping, serious accident, natural disaster, violent attacks, (like mugging, rape, torture, or being held captive), or simply witnessing any of these events happen to another. Individuals with PTSD are characterized by “increased anxiety, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, numbing of emotions and emotional responses”. (“National institute o Mental Health”, 2010) PTSD was brought to public attention
All these five purposes are stated in the last paragraph of the introduction (Pyrczak, 2008). Que 1: Anger, violence, and other negative feelings among alcohol and drug addicted individual, and how traditional therapy is not always helpful to all participants with the addiction were specifically identified in the problem area. Que 2: The researcher established some individuals who are not helped by the traditional treatment and therefore affected by the negative emotions were more than likely to return back to the addictive
When dealing with clients who are high-risk, it is important to provide support, ensure a support group or structure and implement an exit plan for suicidal ideation clients. Perhaps the greatest challenge when working with suicidal clients is the sense of responsibility that can overcome a counselor treating them. It would be natural
The physical injury gives survivors something to hide behind. Changes, after conflict, are often seen to have a negative effect on the individual, but in some cases the endurance of the conflict can bring on a change for the positive. A transformation in the individual after encountering dissonance can forever shape their relationships with other people. Morals and beliefs can be altered through encountering altered, where the individual is forced to reflect upon their own thoughts. Survivors of conflict are never the same again.
They also injured 27additional students during this attack. The two suspects later committed suicide. This attack was considered one of the deadliest mass murders committed on an American high school campus until the Virginia Tech shooting in April 16, 2007. These incidents sparked debate over gun control laws, and the availability of firearms to public within the United States. Also, gun violence involving juveniles is one of the current topics on daily news and television.
It is impossible to predict who will develop post traumatic stress disorder in response to trauma, for there are certain risk factors that increase vulnerability. The risk factors revolve around the nature of the traumatic event itself. Traumatic events are more likely to cause PTSD when they involve a severe threat to your life or safety. The more extreme and prolonged the threat, the greater risk of developing post traumatic stress disorder in result. Symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder fall into three main categories: intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal.
He was quoted as saying, "they ALL mocked and slaughtered my self esteem it got so bad I had to turn to drugs." Only days after Thanksgiving, Carneal walked into school with his arsenal of weapons and opened fire killing two students (Newman 26-27). Another example from the book is that of Andrew Williams of Santee, CA. Similar to Carneal, Williams was harassed and teased because of his scrawny appearance. He seemed to take this in stride though, however, on the inside he was being destroyed.
Antidepressants and Adolescents Adolescent depression has become an increasingly recognized problem in the past few decades. In response to this rise, more and more children are being prescribed antidepressant medication, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). There are many people on both sides of the debate on whether it is safe to give SSRIs to adolescents. The studies done in recent years on children taking antidepressant medication have indicated a correlation with adolescents taking SSRIs and adolescent suicide. But many studies have also concluded that SSRIs have contributed to an overall decrease in adolescent suicide.
What causes dissociative identity disorder? While there is no proven specific cause of DID, the prevailing psychological theory about how the condition develops is as a reaction to childhood trauma. Specifically, it is thought that one way that some individuals respond to being severely traumatized as a young child is to wall off, in other words, to dissociate those memories. When that reaction becomes extreme, DID may be the result. As with other mental disorders, having a family member with DID may indicate a potential vulnerability to developing the disorder but does not translate into the condition being literally hereditary.
