Body modifications of all types, including tongue piercings are becoming more and more widespread. Just walking down the street there are people with a pierced ear, nose, lip tongue, etc. Although piercings are more commonly popular with younger people including teenagers, most parents do not allow body modifications in that form, or in any. Parents should allow their teenagers to, if they choose, get their tongue pierced. Tongue piercings especially are very safe, rooted in tradition, and allowing them is giving your child a right to express themselves. The piercing of the tongue, along with the healing process, is very safe. First off, piercing any part of the body is not dangerous as long as everything is kept clean and sterile. The tongue is perhaps the safest thing on the body to pierce because when pierced an antibiotic-like slime called LAP is produced in the mouth which speeds up the healing process. The average healing time for a tongue is two-three weeks which is two times faster than the healing time for the regular ear lobe. Tongues also heal very fast because Phagocytes, or a type of white blood cell, act quicker in the mouth than on normal skin. These white blood cells clear dead tissue and clot faster which speeds up healing time. Piercings of any kind are not only safe but definitely rooted in tradition and have been around for hundreds of years. Many cultures, like the ancient Egyptians, look at the piercing of ears, nose, tongues, etc as normal even from the early years of childhood. Moreover, lip and tongue piercings are widely practiced and common in tribes across Africa, Southeast Asia, and in North and South America. Be it spiritual or religious almost every culture has had body modifications in the form of piercings.
