Some of the names that were appearing on the top of the charts surprised me. Who knew that the president of the math club had such a strong throwing arm? Is that my lab partner from freshman year passing every other player in sprints? These girls were working harder than any sports team I had been apart of. Amazingly, girls who had little history with each other were gathering together during breaks, laughing and encouraging teammates.
Everyone was concentrating on Carrolton. When coach named me one of the three juniors that would run, I was scared, nervous and I wanted to perform well. I was running against mostly juniors and seniors. Including last year’s state winner and runner up. All I wanted to do was reach the sub-seventeen, the time under seventeen minutes.
During these practices, I would often hear senior, Sammie Bane, say, “Oh my gosh, why are we still doing these same drills over and over again?” In response to that, Coach Rieckers would reply, “Do you want to go to state and earn respect from the community?” Growing up in a small town, everyone knew everything about each other. This was also the same concept when it came to sports at BCHS. Brownstown was always known for great volleyball, football, and boys’ basketball teams. These teams always went far into the tournament every year in strive to win a state championship title. The same was not known for the girls’ basketball team to achieve.
The Start of Something New Once again I found myself on the competition floor but this time, I had some new teammates. I looked to my left, and then to my right just making sure everyone was lined up and in the places they were supposed to be in. I put my head down and took one deep breath before the music began. Counting out loud so all the kids could hear me we swept through the routine leaving it all on the competition floor. This wasn't any regular cheer competition, this was the Special Olympics and this was my first time volunteering as a Unified Partner.
Aubrey EG 102 23 February 2011 Cheerleading is a Sport Over 4.1 million males and females all around the world devote over 2,000 hours a year to something they absolutely love (Cheerleaders 1). And all they get in return is the label of only an activity. Cheerleaders dedicate too much time, money, sweat, tears and energy just to get told by the Federal Court that they only “support other athletic teams” (Federal Court Rules 1). Those blind to cheerleading underestimate what all cheerleading involves therefore the sport is now being labeled as only an activity. The Supreme Court is wrong in the decision of cheerleading being just an activity; instead it is definitely a sport according to Title IX and the criteria it contains.
The tryouts lasted a week. At the beginning of tryouts, I was not really sure if I was going to make the team because the junior varsity team tried out with the varsity team. Although I was strong, I was not in good enough shape to keep up with the varsity team. Tryouts were very difficult, but I made sure every day to work extremely hard. I also made sure I was doing the drills correctly and precisely because I knew how strict the coaches were.
I am a junior here at Oswego and I played volleyball last year for the 2010 season. I think it needs to be brought to the attention how some of us were treated during pre-season this year. Since we were given a new coach this season I went into tryout with an open mind and excited to be given a new opportunity to play volleyball. Since we were unaware that we needed to get physicals on our own, pre-season was moved to Friday. This gave me only 3 days to prove to coach that I deserve a spot on the roster.
She is now once again fit and feels good about herself. She has joined a gym and attends the gym 2-3 times a week, she participates in several walk a thons every year, and she has taken up salsa dancing. She says that although she loved sports before, her current leisure activities are very rewarding to her. She does say that it is much harder now to lose those extra pounds whereas before it would be very
I have never seen her so excited to go to school and show-off all her hard work, time, and effort she has put in this project. For three days, the judges kept all the science experiments to see who would win 1st place. I had the honor of picking her up from school when they were announcing the winner of the science fair and you would not believe who won, everybody did. Sadly in today’s world everybody is a winner and everybody works just as hard as the next. This communist line of thinking is doing way more damage than good to our American spirit.
I love the thrill of ever game, every week, every season making an impact and actually having meaning and purpose. Utah, Boise State, and all of you other mid major conferences quit whining and man up. The way you do that is strengthen your schedule and stop playing an unimportant season. I have always loved the Cinderella story, but not to the point of jeopardizing the character of the college football nation. Until there is a playoff structure, the anticipation of the top 25 every year will keep me running wild with emotions of anger and thrills.
