I like the friendship between Miles and Phelps because they get closer as the book goes on. I also liked the relationship that Miles and Angie have and how it explains that she used to be his babysitter before he had a crush on her. The fact that Miles’s parents get a divorce and separate during the book is realistic because that happens right now in modern times. What is very memorable about Miles is that he is so smart and friendly to people, even to the Elusions. I think that with the title “The Highest Tide”, and the fact that Florence gave the prediction of the highest tide; it’s predictable.
Even though tragic events occur in the play, it manages to end on a happy note. Benedick and Beatrice finally come clean about their love for one another. Claudio sorts out his affairs with Hero and they reconcile. Both couples are also about to take a trip down the aisle. Benedick and Claudio become friends again too.
When writing to Anne Henry used uses phrases such as ‘my heart shall be dedicated to you alone’. Many people in the court was surprised that Henry had sustained his relationship with Anne for so long as he was well known for keeping short relations with his female companions.
The author describes Elisa’s feeling as, “Everything goes right down into your fingertips. You watch your fingers work…” (p. 633). Once the tinker had left, Elisa’s mental stimulation and self-fulfillment had left with him too. It is clear that she is unsatisfied with the relationship she has with her husband. That takes guts. That is when Sammy's initiation into adulthood becomes apparent. Though some may think that you shouldn't make such brass decisions based solely off the intention of impressing anyone else, instead Sammy holds his ground in being affirmative of his decision that Lengel blatantly embarrassed those women. Unaware that the women had already sped out the sliding doors, Sammy “[hoped the women] had stop to watch [him], their unsuspected hero” (Updike 195), stand up for them. Though the women were unaware of what Sammy had done.
Because it is an accepted practice for an older married woman and a younger man to be friends, Edna’s husband sees nothing strange about this. After a time Edna and Robert grow closer and start to feel for each other in more than just a platonic way. Though she doesn’t act on her growing feeling, this makes Edna reevaluate her life. She realized that she wasn’t happy with the way her life was going. Edna felt as if everyone had control of what she did, except herself.
The town’s people at first recognize her as a stranger or outcast, but as time wears on people get over it and realize she is just as normal as any other human. “Individuals in private life, meanwhile, had quite forgiven Hester Prynne for her frailty; nay, more, they had begun to look upon the scarlet letter as the token, not of that one sin, for which she had borne so long and dreary a penance, but of her many good deeds since”(Hawthorne et al. 139). The townsfolk have an unparalleled amount of jealousy for her having an affair, and being able to wear what the folks say is an attractive looking letter. The townsfolk develop a mysterious wonderment as to why Hester seems relatively unfazed wearing the letter day in day out.
Alcee Arobin is a lady’s man who has many affairs with different women and intends to make Edna another one of his affairs. But Edna doesn’t let Alcee take control of the relationship; she writes him when she wants and decides when they should go out. Being in control is a reverse role for Edna, but she knows it is really who she is, and it is what she wants. Alcee plays along and lets Edna take control, and Edna discovers the satisfaction of using a man the way men usually use women. Although Edna has taken control of her own life, she is still not happy with her life because of the many different types of love she has experienced.
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” there are many aspects of the theme loneliness that the author John Steinbeck personified. The theme loneliness is shown many times with different characters but the character that stands out is Curley’s wife. Curley’s wife went through many obstacles to achieve her goal, which was to gain freedom of not being lonely, but as she tried too much she came to short and her life ended by trying to achieve the best for
For some women, the struggle was never resolved; while others took most of a lifetime. For a few lucky women, they were granted amnesty. The two poems describe women’s feelings of oppression and their battle to deal with the issues of this power imbalance. They also point out the struggle many women face in a male dominated society. The first poem is “Daddy” by Sylvia Plath.
