Evan Biggs Dr. Ross May 8, 2012 The Ohio Statehouse I viewed the Ohio Statehouse on the afternoon of Sunday May 6. This building began construction in 1839 and finished in 1861. Henry Walter was a contest winner and oversaw the construction and design of the Ohio Statehouse. Prisoners who were sentenced to hard labor built the Ohio Statehouse, and it seems that they did a wonderful job. The main attraction is eight large pillars at the entrance of the statehouse, and in between the fourth and fifth pillars, which is the middle, is the doorway to enter the statehouse. There is a triangular pediment on top of the building, and just behind that appears to be a circular part of the building that sticks up above the rest. This circular…show more content…
Two flagpoles with American flags attached to them stand at each side of the pediment, and when viewing straight on, the dome exterior splits the flagpoles down the middle. There are two rows of four windows on each side of the pillars. The equal number of windows, the dome in the center of the flagpoles, and the entrance in the center of the pillars give the statehouse a very geometrical look. Also contributing to the geometrical view is the extremely wide staircase with only two railings that are about as far apart from each other as the door width. So, when looking straight on, the railings lead right into the entrance of the statehouse. There are multiple statues surrounding the statehouse, green grass, trees, lampposts, benches as well as other things that combine to create beautiful scenery.
