It was Good vs. Evil where a good warrior fights for his glory then later battles for the good of his people by battling evil monsters for there good. As a great warrior and later a king he faces near death. The first battle with Grendel he risked his life, but he did to reach fame for the glory and to prove that he is the mighty Beowulf. The battle with Grendel’s mother he fought for the greater good of the people to stop the terrorizing that they have done for years.
The Coward Oedipus Is “A coward is much more exposed to quarrels than a man of spirit”. This quote by Thomas Jefferson portrays Oedipus because throughout ‘Oedipus Rex’ he quarrels with everybody about he truth and becomes blind to it. By blinding himself Oedipus becomes a coward because he doesn’t want to face his crimes. It all started when Oedipus hears a dreadful prophecy that he will murder his father and sleep with his mother. He leaves Corinth and travels to Thebes, and on the way he unknowingly kills his father during a quarrel.
He makes Othello, the stereotypical outsider, one of the most powerful men in the play. Though his skin may seem to force a subordinate role, Othello commands vast armies. Recalling his past full of militaristic might he thinks of all “the battles, sieges, fortunes,/ That I have passed.” The racist men in Venice think of black men as unintelligent, but Othello is militaristically and strategically gifted. They think he is an animal only looking for sex, but he and his wife are genuinely in love. Brabantio comments about Othello’s and Desdemona’s marriage in a judgmental tone to Iago when he says “It is a judgment maim'd and most imperfect/ That will confess perfection so could err/ Against all rules of nature”, but in reality Othello has all the rights in the world to marry Desdemona regardless of his race.
When a dragon begins attacking his villages, Beowulf feels that he must kill the dragon just as he did the other two monsters so many years ago. His followers warn him that he will be defeated, but he goes on anyway claiming that he must protect his kingdom. He is fatally wounded in the battle, but with the help of one of his men he is able defeat the dragon before he dies. This act led to a noble end for this brave character after dying for his people "Grendel went up to Herot, wondering what the warriors would do in that hall when the drinking was done"(Beowulf 30-33). This indicates that Grendel longs to be accepted by society.
To begin, Macbeth is viewed as a brave and fearless man with very good military standing he is also viewed as a good leader. Macbeth is a good man at this point in the play but due to some prophecies that are made by, some crazy witches; he starts to betray his closest friends. Macbeth begins to plot against King Duncan, the man who just named him Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth realizes the costliness of killing the king and how his actions may damn him forever. Macbeth tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, That he cannot go through with it and she begins to question him, “When you durst do it, then you were a man; And, to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man” (Shakespeare I.VII.
He also uses his strength to save a young girl from drowning. No matter what the monster does, he is always misinterpreted. The monster says, “Fatal prejudice clouds their eyes, and where they ought to see a feeling and a kind friend, they behold only a detestable monster” (pg.119). Felix and Agatha think he has come to attack their father, William Frankenstein thinks the monster is trying to kill him, and the man thinks he is trying to murder the girl rather than rescue her. The real turning point for the monster is when he is accused of trying to murder the girl.
These outsiders serve mainly to be scorned by the “higher” members of society, and to make those “insiders” feel better about themselves. The character that is most easily recognizable as an outsider in The Bluest Eye is Pecola Breedlove, but her father, Cholly, who has had his own experiences with self-hatred, initially establishes her self-hatred and status as an outsider. The beginning of this vicious cycle takes place during Cholly’s adolescence. The origin of his self-hatred is his first sexual experience, which is interrupted by two white men catching he and Darlene in the act. Though Cholly was humiliated by the white men, “he hated the one who had created the situation, the one who bore witness to his failure, his impotence” (151).
Hawthorne makes it seem that he enjoys having power over others. It seems almost as if he becomes a high school bully who makes everyone’s lives miserable. He shows off this “power” over Hester when he tells her to keep quiet about their relationship status by saying, “My finger…would have hurled [Dimmesdale]…to the gallows!"(123). This threat is true however, because Chillingworth did have a large portion of control over Dimmesdale’s life. His willingness to slaughter the man for so weak a reason is frightening though.
The Judges in The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe are considered villains because of how they torture innocent civilians. Okeke is the least villainous, the H-G men are the middle villainous, and the Judges are the most villainous from the three chosen stories. In the story Marriage is a private Affair Okeke is the villain because he treats his son unfairly. For example, when Okeke heard the news of his son’s marriage with a girl he did
But that is not the case. Everything on the outside may look nice and put together, but the inside is a mess. She and her husband Tom may seem like they have an okay relationship, but ‘"Look!’ she complained… We all looked – the knuckle was black and blue. ‘You did it, Tom,’ she said accusingly…’That's what I get for marrying a brute of a man, a great, big, hulking physical specimen of a– "’(12). Tom abuses Daisy and he also cheats on her.
