Oedipus and Othello

In reading Sophocles play Oedipus Rex and William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Othello, I realize the main characters Oedipus and Othello have a great deal of similarities, yet have a few differences. The two plays were written many years apart, and the main characters are both interesting to figure out. Oedipus is well respected, while Othello is respected, but not by everyone in his community. The characters have bad flaws, one is arrogant and the other is jealous. Furthermore, both of the men end up in tragic horror. Oedipus is well respected in his community for solving the riddle to the “sphinx” (a monster with a lion’s body, bird’s wings, and a woman’s face pg. 1308) and that is what makes him King of Thebes. When Thebes gets hit by the plague, the people of Thebes come to Oedipus asking for his help to save their community again. “Therefore, O mighty king, we turn to you: find us our safety, find us remedy” (pg.1308). Similarly, Othello is well respected for being a general in the Venetian Army “Valiant Othello” (I.II.49). On the other hand, Othello also has some people who do not respect him. Iago is upset for not being picked to be Othello’s lieutenant, so he says “we cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly followed” (I.I.40-41). Barbanito, who is Othello’s wife Desdemona’s father, believes that Othello stole Desdemona away from him, calling Othello a “foul thief” (I.II.62). Roderigo is a man that has had a crush on Desdemona and is now angry that Othello has married her and Roderigo calls Othello names like “thick-lips” (I.I.63). While Oedipus is respected by all the people in his community, Othello is only respected by few people. Oedipus is very arrogant; Teiresias tries to explain to Oedipus that he is actually the one who killed his own father King Laios. Teiresias says “I say you are the murderer whom you seek” (pg.1316), but
