1. What type of retailer is Nordstrom? Describe the characteristics it shares with other retailers of this type. I would say Nordstrom’s is a specialty store because of their service levels are high, assortment is narrow, price could be moderate to high, and the gross margin is high. According to a statement from the case study, Industry observer Lior Arussy calls Nordstrom’s business strategy “greed through love.” Nordstrom’s shares the same characteristics as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord and Taylor’s. While the price might be high to shop for clothes and home decorations at these stores, most designer brands prove to be of better quality, uniqueness, and durability. 2. How would you describe Nordstrom’s level of service on the continuum from full service to self-service? Why? Give an example of a store that would be on the opposite end of the continuum and explain their differences. Nordstrom’s level of service can be regarded as extremely high. With their business strategy based on “greed on love” as the case study explains, giving their entire focus on the customer. This has proved to be hugely successful as they forge longtime customer relationships. Salespeople at Nordstrom will do everything they could and even beyond to give the customer perfectly customer service. A salesperson who gives individual attention to customers like assisting a customer with one leg that wants the sale of only one shoe is on a self-service level. The level of full-service entails salespeople that assist customers with the locating of products those are not located within their store, and their exchange policies that have no questions to ask customers when they are making returns.
