Conflicts with the Boston Photographs When Stanley Forman took the photos of what he thought would make great shots for a front page newspaper, he never knew it would end up on every newspaper in the United States. His shots would be so controversial it would change the way newspapers posted pictures forever. In Nora Ephron’s essay, The Boston Photographs, there were three pictures. The first was of a fire fighter holding onto a frightened woman and son with smoke pouring from the building behind them. Next was a picture of the fire escape falling from under them with the fire fighter holding onto the ladder, the woman trying to catch hold of something to grab onto and the toddler sliding down the escape. I know that if I was a family member or a friend of the people showed in the pictures, I would not want these to be available for the world to see. We praised these pictures when in reality we should have mourned the death other the individual in the picture. Just like in Bruce Franklin’s Realism to Virtual Reality: Images of America’s Wars, he states, "Scores of commercial photographers, seeking authenticity and profits,”(Franklin 810). He is absolutely correct; photographers will take photographs of almost anything to make a profit. This includes pictures of fallen soldiers and people performing desperate acts trying to save their lives. We as citizens of this country do not want to see pictures of our soldiers that given their lives for freedom; rather we would like to see pictures of them succeeding in wars. This goes as well to the “Boston Photographs”, where we would have liked to see the firefighters succeed in the rescue attempt, instead we see the failure.
