On January 28, 1986, on the twenty-fifth mission of the shuttle program, the shuttle Challenger exploded into flames shortly after lift-off. A presidential commission eventually identified the cause of the explosion as a failure of the joints on a booster rocket to seal. “The 'culprits' were the synthetic rubber O-rings that were designed to keep the rockets' super hot gases from escaping from the joints between the booster's four main segments. Resulting flames then burned through the shuttle's external fuel tank. Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen then mixed and ignited, causing the explosion that destroyed the Challenger" (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009, p. 375).
At the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, in Tacoma, Washington, he released thirty-six passengers and two crew members once his demands were met (Pasternak). After taking off again Cooper ordered the plane to fly at a low altitude towards Mexico. At 8:13pm pressure gauges recorded his jump over the Lewis River from 10,000ft into a thunderstorm with over a hundred mile per hour winds and negative temperatures wearing only a thin suit, wrap-around sunglasses, and a rain coat (Brad Meltzer's Decoded). Many people believe that this was a suicidal jump and that Cooper died that night (Mysterious Disappearances in U.S. History). A reporting error in this high interest case mixed up his name forever immortalizing him as D.B.
On the 6th of August 1945, the USA dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The atomic bomb, "Little Boy", was dropped from Enola Gay. On the first instant, 71,000 vanished immediately on the spot, and later on, another 49,000 died as a result of injuries and radiation. Three days later, on the 9th of August, the USA dropped a second bomb, "Fat Man", on Nagasaki. This time, 40,000 were killed instantly, and another 40,000 due to injuries and radiation.
The B-29 Bomber dropped the Uranium-235 called Little Boy on the Town. Ten square kilometers of the city were flattened and 78,000 people killed. Three days later the Fatman Plutonium bomb was dropped on Nagaski, killing 35,000
* Frederick L. Ashworth flew with Sweeney in Bockscar and was responsible for arming the bomb. * The primary target was the city of Kokura. Nagasaki was the secondary target. * Bockscar’s reserve fuel tank was not pumping fuel correctly so the plane could not make use of the extra 600 gallons. * About 40,000 people died in this mission.
The bombers opened their bomb bay doors, exerted a miraculous magnetism which shrunk the fires, gathered them into cylindrical steel containers, and lifted the containers into the bellies of the planes…The Germans below had miraculous devices of their own, which were long steel tubes […] to suck more fragments from the crewmen and planes. When the bombers got back to the base, the steel cylinders were taken from the racks and shipped back to the United States of America, where factories were operating night and day, dismantling the cylinders, separating the dangerous contents into minerals…” (Vonnegut, P. 74-75). This scene goes so on and so forth in a similar manner. Upon looking closely at this passage, we cannot help but laugh. In simplest terms, we would say that it is “funny”.
The FBI found no traces of explosives at the crash sites, and the 9/11 Commission concluded the bombs were probably fake. Three buildings in the World Trade Center Complex collapsed due to structural failure. The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. after burning for 102 minutes. When the North Tower collapsed, debris fell on the
Response Paper 6: Everything Was Different Summary The scientists working on the Manhattan Project carted the parts for the first nuclear bomb test to Los Alamos. Once there the scientists assembled the bomb which consisted of an outer ring of plutonium surrounding an inner shell of beryllium containing polonium. This bomb was then hoisted to the top of a 100 foot tower to await its detonation at 5:30 am the next morning. The scientists viewed the explosion and dust cloud from a shelter approximately 6 miles from the drop site. After the excitement that experiment was successful died down the scientists discovered that the explosion and fallout from the bomb were more severe than expected.
Kim Zaring Kenneth Smith English 1101 (crn 80128) Research Paper 13 November 2010 Devastation It was a normal morning on September 11, 2001, when the United States had a horrific attack that took place on our soil for just the third time in our history. There were four planes that had been hijacked, and these planes where being operated by terrorists. Two of the planes were flown directly into the two towers of the World Trade Centers that was located in New York City. The first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center around 8:46 A.M. (911 timeline). The second plane hit the South tower of the World Trade Center around 9:02 A.M. (911 timeline).
Holocaust: a great or complete devastation or destruction. Alas, Babylon, written by Pat Frank, is a frightening pessimistic story because the dramatic effects of a nuclear war almost wipes out the population, causes more criminal activity, and a rampage of diseases to spread across the country. The life of the River Road Family took a fatalistic turn after a massive bombing by the Soviet Union kills millions of people, including their friends and family. “This was the end. Civilization was crushed” (page 103).
