My Reflection If we think of teachers as directors of a show, I believe that I just watched the most awesome live show this afternoon. Xie Lao presented a show that was well organized, fast-paced, entertaining, and productive. From the moment Laoshi walked in, announcing “wo men xin zai shang ke le”, his show began. He directed his students into roles they probably did not even realize they were playing, but surely they demonstrated enthusiasm through active participation of “dui ma”, “bu dui”, “dong le ma”, “dong le”, etc. I was amazed to see how these students, with almost zero Chinese background, quickly picked up the meaning of complicated phrases such as “qing ni hui da” “qing ni zai shuo yi bian” and “gen zhuo wo shuo” in a very short time by simply listening and watching their master teacher. They were also able to differentiate between “ting wo shuo” and “gen zhe wo shuo”. I really liked Xie Lao demonstration of “you ma”, “mei you”, and “you” by using a pen. The “dao jiu” was very simple, yet very effective. Students grasped the idea of “you” by having the pen in one hand and “mei you” when there is no pen in one’s hand. Another very interesting example of simple and effective “dao jiu” usage was passing the water bottle to others while learning the phrases of “qing” and “bu ke qi”. Students did not know what was coming to them, but their attention and mind were guided to grasp the ideas quickly. I cannot believe that teaching can be this vivid, fun, and effective. I learned three modes of communication during Xie Lao class this afternoon: teacher to students, students to students, and students to teachers. All three modes of communications were presented through teaching different phrases. Students not only learned some important basic class phrases, including greeting phrases such as “lao shi hao”, “tong xue men hao”, “xie xie” and “bu ke
