Timed Literature Essay Q: From your reading thus far, what do you think of Eddie and the way he is presented? Miller is extremely intelligent when it comes to crafting characters for the play. In the beginning, Eddie appears over-protective and is labelled as a good man by Alfieri. Eddie seems unable to let Catherine live her own life, and it appears that Eddie might have more than the normal feelings of care for his niece. He shows his concern through his statement: “Listen, you been givin’ me the willies the way you walk down the street, I mean it.” There is an interesting use of word choice here, Eddie has to mention “I mean it” to reinforce how strongly he feels.
The spade symbolizes the passion the author’s forefathers had in their work and the passion the author has for his work is symbolized by his pen. Habit 2:Begin with the End in Mind was probably the habit that hit home most for me. Like most teens I was struggling with my priorities. I have to juggle cheer, my music, my grades, my home life, and trying to manage a social life. When we read habit two it helped me realize what’s most important to me. Writing a mission statement was one of the best things I’ve done for myself in awhile.
He continues to describe what makes a good story-teller. A good story teller, according to Ngugi, is one that is able to use language to make the same story seem interesting, and make stories told by others more exciting (998). Ngugi then goes on to describe the intruding colonization that occurred. Rapidly, everything he knew about his life was suppressed, and replacing it was the English language. English became to dominate language to learn, and anyone caught speaking Gikuyu was lashed.
Also if I didn’t say in the essay Toms brother is a big mouth snitch. He is always trying to get Tom in trouble. Honestly I really like this story it is one of my favorites. Mark Twain is a good writer he can put just the right amount of suspense catchy phrases and poetic devises to make the story interesting and it makes the story come to life in your mind. When I read it I was in my own world.
Every person and certainly every student has had their own positive and negative experiences with language. My personal background with writing and thus language has been very influential on me, particularly in my selection process for the pieces I would write about in this assignment. In this essay I will analyze the quotes by Stephen King and “A Case for Short Words” by Richard Lederer to demonstrate that although both arguments are effective, Lederer’s is the strongest. I selected the pieces by Lederer and King because, to me as the reader, they where the most convincing of the writings provided. However, this is in no small part due to my own experiences with language.
Change is an integral part of human life, and is a literary tool often employed by authors to reveal the true nature of a character. In Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”, the novel constantly presents the idea of imminent change; of Lennie getting into trouble and their peaceful environment being shattered. As this happens we see a fundamental change come over George. Always appearing a strong character, all of George’s hopes and dreams are killed with Lennie, even though they would have still been possible. Change here outlines George’s otherwise strong, decisive and problem solving character to be weak without the companionship of Lennie.
