Good morning fine your gentlemen, how are we all doing on this … Day? Is that good I hear? Well of course its going to be good, were about to delve into the crazy and wonderful world of English. Now the question that is being posed to you all to today and that I’m going to attempt to answer for you is… Moments of crisis define characters and bring out the best and worst in relationships. This question is quite relative to both you and I as it occurs almost daily in our hectic, fast paced lives but more importantly it is an effective tool in the use character development in short stories. The text “scission” by Tim Winton is full of these short stories in which crisis takes part in order to create depth within the story to engage the reader further. The story I feel that really is most appropriate and to tell you the truth the text I liked the most is “My fathers Axe” In short, the story is about a man who grieves the loss of his axe. It has been stolen. As the story unfolds, the main character takes the reader on a reminiscent journey through the thoughts and memories he posses. The main character remembers nights chopping wood in the darkness and a child getting to know his silent, practical, muscly, rugged father. His obsession to find the axe becomes a search back through memories that are woken by axe. The missing axe becomes a symbol. Tim Winton has cleverly used the axe as a symbol of the relationship our narrator holds with his father and further symbolises it as the a pivotal point in keeping their house warm and the provision of cooked meals. There becomes an established relationship between the characters and their environment. The first line of the story alerts the reader to the immediacy of the situation - "Just now l discover the axe is gone." Throughout the story the reference to the missing axe conjures a sense of mystery. The character tries
