Over the past few years they seem to have taken over movies, television and literature making more and more people become more interested in these lifeless, brain-eating creatures. Although there are several different adaptations of zombies from George A Romero’s slow moving, rotting, brain eating zombies to Max Brooks’s crazed creature, running zombies, some in our culture has made it their way of life to prep for a zombie attack. AMC’s hit show “The Walking Dead” is currently going on its fourth season. This leaves Max Brooks “The Zombie Survival Guide” vulnerable to the consumption of the zombie fanatics who feed on anything zombie related. Brooks has written a follow up to “The Zombie Survival Guide” called “The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks” and has a movie currently in theaters called “World War Z” (Brodesser-Anker, 2013). It is obvious that there is a demand for zombie entertainment in today’s society. According to Brooks, “There’s been some really scary stuff that’s been happening — 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina, anthrax letters, D.C. sniper, global warming, global financial meltdown, bird flu, swine flu, SARS. I think people really feel like the system’s breaking down (Brodesser-Anker, 2013, para. When we met).” With all the uncontrollable events that are magnified through the eyes of the media it is no wonder that people can relate to the apocalyptic world depicted in the books of Max Brooks. Because Brooks travels all over to warn society of the zombie apocalypse however the question here is how much of the stuff does Brooks believes him self. Brooks wrote The Survival Zombie Guide for his pleasure because it was something that he wanted to read. Brooks cultural values were challenged because he does not believe in zombies, however the zombies that Brooks is talking about are the everyday challenges that we as humans encounter. Cultural values are challenged because there are times when individuals must face and deal with these challenges. Culture has been changing and adapting over the years and movies, music and literature have been a huge part of that. Zombies are no exclusions and are not just another type of genre of literature, for some it has became a way of life. Several people believe that one day there might actually be a zombie apocalypse and it will be the end of the world, as we know it.
