Masculinity vs Femininity in La Grande Illusion and King Kong

In viewing La Grande Illusion and King Kong it is clear to see that both, while different, have very clear cut ideas of gender. The way the two genders interact is fascinating to watch. The men in La Grande Illusion are boisterous army men, starved of women during a stint in a prisoner of war camp. The very absence of females in this film is striking and the men react accordingly. In King Kong, the lone woman, Ann Darrow, is showered with attention and becomes the catalyst for the entire plot. Both of these films use women as a plot device in how the men should behave. They both keep the women and the men safely separate, yet intriguingly connected. La Grande Illusion deals heavily with what it is to be a man without the presence of women and King Kong focuses mostly on the constant power struggle between the two genders. In La Grande Illusion, we are first presented with the capture of Marechal, a mechanic and Boeldieu, an aristocrat. These two men fighting during the war are transported to a prisoner of war camp where they are greeted by a large group of men already staying there. The men immediately form a kind of camaraderie in trying to escape, regardless of their class. They speak mostly of their lives before the war, reminiscing on meals that they had and women that they had been with. There is not one woman present here, and this lack of femininity rears its’ ugly head when the men are given a trunk of women’s clothing. They scour through the articles like a pack of wild dogs, frantically grabbing, holding and smelling each piece. This gives rise to a conversation about the changing of women’s styles, for now the women were sporting shorter hemlines and shorter hair. A prisoner states that he would love to see it and that it would be like “sleeping with a boy”. This doesn’t seem to deter any of the men and suggests a sort of homosexuality; that without
