Now stop and think about how you should treat your heritage. Do you simply think your heritage is something to just remember, or do you believe you should apply the things inherited from heritage to everyday use? In Alice Walker’s short story, “Everyday Use,” Mama, Maggie, and Dee, three very different characters, have controversy over this topic. Mama is a tough and robust woman, who has worked all her life to provide for her family. Mama’s always had a soft spot for her daughter, Dee, but when Mama finally stands up to her, she sends the message that the things you inherit from your heritage should be applied to everyday use.
The book goes full cycle when the narrator becomes Rayona’s grandmother, a woman named Ida. She brings closure to the book by filling the gaps in the family’s history. Ida is the most interesting character in the novel. She is a bitter woman who has more interest in T.V. characters than she does in her own family.
In ‘The Jilting of Granny Weatherall’ by Katherine Anne Porter, the character of Granny is that of a stubborn old woman that thinks of herself as a survivor who prides herself on the strength she has shown throughout her life. An outsider may think a woman who is in her 80’s has had a full life, but Granny would lead the reader to believe otherwise. To the reader she can come across as harsh and bitter. As she lay on her death bed she tries to convince her family that she is in good health all while she retells portions of her life giving us a deeper look into her mind. Granny Weatherall is a woman in denial about the basic truths of her life and character.

I foretold every single thing that’s happened.” For Sister this is something for her to rejoice in because for once Stella-Ronda did not have such good fortune. From her statement above she has been waiting on this to happen. Sister is also questioning the parentage of Stella-Rondo’s “adopted” child. Sister does not

But if you’ll going to pray about it don’t worry about it because if you’ll going to worry then don’t pray. You have to put it in God hands and leave it. My mother’s way of living has really
There are some days that I too think about ending my life, but I know that I must stay strong for my country and for you and the children. Speaking of you, how are things going on the home front? I hope things are going smoothly and knowing you I bet they are. How are my dearest daughters Ophelia and Meredith doing? It pains me to think of them growing up without a father.
