Katy Lockwood Aimee Wood In this assignment I will be describing how health and safety legislation, policies and procedures promote the safety of individuals in health and social care settings. Legislations: are put in place by governing bodies and apply to all settings. These can be put in place as Acts, Regulations and Laws. Policies: are statements of intent Procedures: are step-by-step instructions on how to do something i.e. the fire procedure. Health hazards: are potential hazards that could cause illness. Safety hazards: are hazards that could cause injury. Security hazards: are hazards to the security of patients, staff and the setting. Manual Handling Regulations 1992 The regulations define manual handling as “any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force”. In the UK 1.1 million people reported that they suffered from musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) caused or made worse by work. It is estimated that 12.3 million working days are lost annually due to work-related MSD’s. The Manual Handling Regulations state that employers should introduce control measures such as: To avoid hazardous manual handling as far as is reasonably practicable. To assess any hazardous manual handling operation that cannot be avoided. To reduce the risk of injury as far as is reasonable. The Manual Handling Regulations 1992 set no specific requirements such as weight limits. No manual handling task is ever completely safe but following the proper procedure will reduce the risk of injury to you and the service user.
