When looking to become an New York Police Department officer, the hiring process is a lengthy procedure. The process consist of a pre hire interview, a medical exam, a written exam, a job standard test, oral psych, a character investigation, and some other smaller requirements. To be hire on as an officer for the New York Police Department you must be at least 21 years old, not 18. You must be a US citizen before you apply. You must have completed at least 60 college credits with a GPA of no less than 2.0. If you didn’t go to school you can also have served a minimum for 2 years of full time active duty in the military for the United States. You must live in one of the five boroughs of New York City or one of the surrounding counties. You must have a valid New York City driver’s license. You are required to have a clean background and absolutely no felonies what so ever. You have to pay a $75.00 fee for fingerprinting as part of the investigation process. You have to pass the drug and alcohol screening. For the written exam you must be at least 18 years old, and not over 35. However, if you are 35 more and have actively served in the United States military the NYPD may add six years to the age requirement. Even though the nypd and lapd have similar steps in there hiring process, there are many reasons why the LAPD it is slightly different. The first step to the LAPD is filling out a Preliminary Background Application and Job Preview Questionnaire, this is a very common first step to many companies hiring process. Next is the Personal Qualifications Essay. In the essay, you are to answer questions about your work ethic, decision making skills, and judgment After that essay is submitted a Background Investigation and Polygraph Examination is required.
