Language Used in 'Nettles' by Vernon Scannell

In nettles language to do with war is used to show that Scannell views the nettles as a threat to people and they are like an army. ‘that regiment of spite behind the shed’ shows that he classes the nettles as an army who are ready to fight and hurt the next person coming into contact with them. I think Scannell has used words like regiment, parade and recruits to show that parents can’t always protect their children from dangers everywhere just like in the army you could get injured at any point in time you are never always protected. I infer from this that Scannell has realised that all through life he can’t protect his son and he has to get hurt, he has compared everything to an army because they are unstoppable because like in an army theyre is so many people and in this case there is son many dangers his child could come across in his life and he will have to deal with them and hope to pull through after it. Scannell has learnt that this is part of life as he said at the end ‘my son would often feel sharp wounds again.’ This suggests that like in an army you will never only feel pain once, you will feel it multiple times and like his child because there are so many dangers in the world t that he could come across and his father isn’t always going to be there to protect him and fight the armies of danger
