AHS100/Final Exam April 30, 2013 The work of art I chose was a piece by Joan Snyder, called Lady Labyrinth. It is mixed media on canvas and was done in 1989. One of the two works around this piece is by Mimmo Paladino, titled Canto Guerriero. It is oil, gouache, pastel and wax paper adhered to a canvas. This work was done in 1981. The second of the two works around Lady Labyrinth is by Mel Bochner titled Mistake/Meaningless. When I look at Lady Labyrinth I see a bold example of the abstract style, expressionism. It’s an organized mess of a variety of mediums. The color is predominantly white in the four corners, but has splatters of other colors from the main piece in the middle. I have always been interested in the expressionism era of abstract art due to the intense emotion I tend to feel towards the bold pieces. I noticed in Snyder’s piece that it looked as if pieces were torn apart and then reconstructed. Did Snyder feel as if she had been torn apart and reconstructed? And there were many parts in the middle section where it was as if someone had drug a knife of some sort through it. This made me wonder if Snyder had felt betrayed by someone, a loved one or a higher power, someone that she held a high respect for that seemingly “stabbed” her in the chest or back. Based on my previous knowledge of Snyder, I wondered, “Was there any connection between this painting and her feminist ways?” Or, “was this a reflection of her personal struggles?” I didn’t understand because of my limited knowledge of her personal life and my limited knowledge about feminism around the late 1900’s. I made a long-shot observation and wondered if the grapes that I noticed toward the bottom of the work had anything to do with fertility or women because grapes symbolize positive fertility. Maybe I was looking to deeply into the work and seeing things that are not there, but within the middle “cross” area, around the top piece, it looks as if there is a woman wearing some sort of red cap or with red hair. Her eyes are blacked out and her lips are voluptuous and red. The feminine soft hues of pinks and peaches led me to believe that there was a body in the center of this art piece. Why would Snyder place this woman in the middle just to cover her up? It made me feel as if the woman within the painting was being overlooked and then I questioned myself, “Did Snyder feel overlooked in her life?” If that was the case, in what aspects of her life did she feel overlooked? I then wondered if that was her, trapped in her own mind or trapped in a society that did not view her as an equal, which
