She practices her faith even though she can get crops or needs from the Wal-Mart that is “just down the road” (112). She can even perform a ceremony for her granddaughter in New York to the “twenty-first century totem pole…made of flash and neon” (114). Harjo is able to carry out her rituals and use her belief as a therapeutic figure for challenges she faces in life because nothing can damage her spiritual experience. Before Kamps became the spiritual being she is now, she once went to church to find truth in life. When Kamps’ mother died and she was pregnant, she needed the church the most.
She alludes to this because she has lost her way on Gods path to her eternal salvation. This is affiliated with the bible, specifically Jacob. She feels as though she has been put into his place. This is a good quote because it helps her keep her faith, and trust that god will help her in the end. Rowlandsons’ other philosophy is that God will help her with her troubles and sorrows in life.
Her life greatly influenced literature today and the censorship that follows. On February 8, 1850, Katherine O’Flaherty was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Thomas O’Flaherty and Eliza Faris. She was their second born child and later in life became known as the famous author, Kate Chopin. Most importantly, through my grandmother’s love of knowing and discovering, she showed me the importance of the mind and the power it gives to us. I am also inspired by my grandmother’s love for volunteering and bringing happiness to the unfortunate. When I was four years old my grandmother first took me to Wrentham Developmental Center to spend time with mentally and physically disabled residents. She introduced me to so many people that have helped shaped who I am. The resident my grandmother spent the most time with was a woman wheel chair bound with cerebral palsy named Nancy.
I knew immediately that I was going to like Ms. Terri. I was so happy, my mom liked her too. My mom, Ms. Terri and my dad would do everything all together with me such as sports and school activities. They all worked really hard to get along and to make sure I felt loved. When I was eight years old my dad and Ms. Terri got a divorce.
I recall calling her in tears, not knowing what to do, feeling as if I was failing as a Mother. But she would always soothe me by saying, “You are a wonderful mom. Your son is just like you; he wants to do everything at his own pace. Have patience my child.” Her faith is like a rock; it will not be broken. With her help and the Lord’s, I have been able to learn how to forgive and let go of pain that had tied my heart down for many years.
When asked to identify the person who has had the most significant influence in my life, the most obvious choice is my mom. She has been my teacher, counselor, role model, and friend for the past 19 years. For me, she has become a source of inspiration and a constant reminder of what true love really means. The characteristic of my mother are none of what are different from any that I have seen in other people. The moment I perceived that I was listening attentively and helping people out in many ways, and taking responsibility for things, I realized that I was following the example of my mother.
