Unit 207 Implement Person Centred Approaches in Heath and Social Care Outcome 1 Understand person centred approaches for care and support What are person centred values? These are the standards of care working which put a person’s life choices first. They include: • promoting someone’s independence and individuality • respecting their privacy • preserving their dignity • working in partnership with them and respecting their right to make choices. Why is it important to work in ways that embed person centred values? When you work in a way that embeds person-centred values you are supporting the people you work with so that they can live the life that they choose to.
It has an influence on social care work, because we need to make sure that we are communicating well, and listening to the individual's wishes and preferences, and we need to remember not to dothings without discussing it with service user. Rights Every service user has rights and these must be respected. However, it need to be understood that rights and responsibilities have to be balanced. Some tensions between what the service user perceives as their right and what we can offer as a part of the service might be encountered. Examples of rights: dignity, privacy, choice of diet, choice of dress, the chance to say own opinion, etc.
Active participation means that they are not just recipients of care but involved in it and supported to be as independent as possible. Again this is empowering and it encourages them to be more aware of potential dangers. Promoting choices and rights shows that carers respect individuals. It might mean acknowledged individuals rights to take risks, accepting choices that the carers might not make for themselves, checking that the individual has full information to make choices etc. It also means understanding your duty of care, maintaining confidentiality etc.
We can then use this information to involve the person in making more choices. -Another key value is to support people having their privacy if they want it. Privacy is a basic human need. Our need for privacy depends on our personality, interests and circumstances. As care workers we must respect people’s need for privacy whenever it arises.
Ai Definition of person-centred values - The purpose of person-centred values is to ensure that the individual needing care is placed at the very centre of the decision making process about their life, the services and support they want and need. It is treating people as individuals, making sure they have their privacy, making sure they have access to their rights, treating people with dignity and respect and supporting people to be as independent as possible. Aii Why it is important social care workers work in a way that promotes person centred values - It is important to promote person centred values so that the individual will feel empowered and in control of their lives, be more confident about making decisions and so that they will feel valued and respected. Aiii Definition of the term ''consent'' in adult social care - Consent is the informed agreement to an action or decision. To establish consent would be to be given permission or approval on such actions or decisions.
In this essay I am going to describe how anti-discriminatory practice is promoted in health and social care settings. In addition to this I am going to write about the ethical principles and I am going to think about putting the patient/service user at the heart of service provision, for example providing active support consistent with the beliefs, culture and preferences of the individuals, supporting individuals to express their needs and preferences, empowering individuals, promoting individuals’ rights, choices and wellbeing; balancing individual rights with the rights of others; dealing with conflicts; identifying and challenging discrimination. Furthermore I will also link it too personal beliefs and values and think about how it influences on
