How has Mark Haddon use first person in The curious incident of the dog in the night time? Christopher becomes a detective to find out who murdered Mrs Shears’ dog. He then finds out the truth about his mother and runs away from home to find her. All the time this is happening Christopher is writing a book and it is this book that we read, told from Christopher’s point of view. I will explain Mark Haddon’s use of writing in the first person narrative and the advantages and disadvantages of writing in this particular style and how Mark Haddon overcomes the disadvantages. And I will say whether I think Mark Haddon used this method successfully or if he should have used the third person. The book describes a 15-year old Aspergers Sufferer named Christopher and the troubles and misfortunes of his life. His father and his teacher Siobhan care for Christopher as his mother who ran away to London with boyfriend, Mr. Shears. However they are all close to Christopher and are included in the book. One advantages of writing in the first person are that when someone reads the book, they would normally feel more involved with what is going on and to connect with the characters more. It is easier to understand and agree with who they are reading about. They might start to find similarities between themselves and the characters they are reading about in the book. Another advantage of writing in first person is that it sometimes the narrator makes the book funny which is good because it makes the book interesting and it make you want to read more . An example is “And then there was a sound like people fighting with swords and I could feel a strong wind and a roaring started and I closed my eyes and the roaring got louder and I groaned really loudly but I couldn't block it out of my ears and I thought the little station was going to collapse or there was a big fire
