The curious incident of the dog in the night time is a story about a fifteen year old boy who finds a neighbours dog dead on the front lawn. Christopher, then embarks on a quest to find who killed the dog called Wellington. This book is very hard to understand as this book like the mind of Christopher, as he is has Asperger’s Syndrome. The writer Mark Haddon has written this book so Christopher is telling the reader the story. Even though it is hard to understand when you read further into it you begin to understand not only the story but also Christopher.
He also is still continuing to write this book, a dairy of his documentations exploring the murder of Mrs. Shears’ dog. Upon returning from school one day, he leaves the book on table and his father finds it. When his father reads the book and finds out that he had continued his search for the murderer of the dog, he confiscates the book. In a search for his book, Christopher finds letters addressed to his father, form his mother, who was supposedly dead. After reading the letters, he finds that his mother left his father with Mr. Shears, and that she has moved to London.
Besides that, the way he tells the story is very captivating and intriguing. It makes you want to read on further, if only to try and figure out how his mind works. I am really enjoying him as a character so far in the novel. The setting is also almost
The novel focuses on a 15yr old boy who has Asperger’s syndrome with an obsession to solve the murder of a dog. However, it’s not all about the dog. The book focuses on what it is to have Asperger’s and the secrets Christopher uncovers during his investigation. Mark Haddon’s use of the Asperger’s boy as the protagonist is unlike any other and creates a unique view of the world. In the novel there are many examples of this unique point of view.
In the novel, The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time written by Mark Haddon, 3 characters that I enjoyed reading about were Christopher, Judy and Ed. Christopher is a 15 year old teenage boy who has Asperger’s . He doesn’t really understand how people are feeling. Christopher is really adventurous because he likes solving mysteries, for example, he decides to write a book about who killed the dog, Wellington. Christopher also went to London by himself and when he was in a really difficult situation, for example he was in a crowded space at the train station; he tried to solve maths equations, puzzles and diagrams in his head to show how he made his own decisions.
The initial event is the death of his neighbour’s dog. A second critical episode occurs when Christopher realizes that his mother is alive. The final occurrence is when Christopher is able to overcome his fears to travel and finally locates his mother. Even though Christopher is an extraordinary individual he is ordinary in the sense that he has fears to overcome just like everyone else. The first event crucial to Christopher’s coming of age is his desire to find the killer of his neighbour’s dog.
Mark Haddon’s novel ‘the curious incident of the dog in the night-time’, is an engaging story that not only entertains, but informs and educates us as well. But electing to use a fifteen year old narrator, who suffers from asperger’s syndrome, we are drawn into a world that most of us have little or no knowledge of. It is undoubtedly haddens purpose to inform and educate us about people who suffer from this disability. He manages to show the positives and negative of this disability and through the power of his writing create empathy, compassion and respect for suffers and their families or carers. The opening chapter alerts us to the uniqueness of the narrative voice.
Pamela: Madeleine Carroll. Professor Jordan: Godfrey Tearle. Mr Memory: Wylie Watson. ➢ Synopsis The story of the 39 Steps revolves around the central protagonist, Richard Hannay who finds that he must escape from his London flat/his life after he finds the woman he picked up the previous night, murdered. The killers are now after him and he follows the single piece of information which could help explain his situation to Scotland.
This informative narrative lets the reader go through the eyes of a young 15 year old teenager called Christopher Boone, who is an Autistic Savant (Higher level Asperger’s Syndrome). Christopher finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington, dead and wants to peruse and investigate a murder mystery just like his famous role model Sherlock Holmes. Boone is a very logical person and keeps track of every little thing that revolves around him. On his way to solving the murder, he uncovers many more mysteries. Everyone should read this intruding novel as it has many aspects which overwhelms other novels, such as the fact that everything is seen through the eyes of Christopher who is also the narrator.
‘After the First Death’ Essay – Erin Macdonald “In what ways can ‘After the First Death’ (ATFD) be said to explore aspects of personal journeys? Make specific reference to the text…“ ‘After the First Death’, written by Robert Cormier, is a novel exploring the personal journeys of several major characters. One main feature is the way it looks at how circumstances, events and the deaths of individuals can derail and affect the intended personal journeys of several young characters. In particular Ben, the peace brokers son, finds he cannot live knowing he is a coward even though his actions were for the good of others. Kate, the bus driver, finds out what it takes to be brave while the young Raymond discovers that he doesn't need to impress anyone anymore.
