November 13, 2013 Before America was her own country, the white settlers owned slaves and when American became her own nation, her citizens still owned and kept slaves. America became divided on the issue of slavery between the North and the South. Slavery affected the United States politically, morally, and economically. Politically, America was affected by dividing the government and citizens. Morally, America was affected by the citizens’ personal feelings on slavery on slavery and how the citizens handled those emotions. Economically, America was affected by the South losing slave labor, causing them to lose profit because of abolitionists and African Americans. The North angered the South by violating the Fugitive Slave Act by helping slaves escape. This helped fuel the Civil War. The United States dealt with slavery by allowing free and slave states, separating the nation. The United States Constitution Article 1, Section 9 states, “The Migration or Importation of such Persons [slaves] now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding Ten dollars for each Person….”. The United States permitted slavery into their country as long slave owners paid on tax on their property (slaves). Article 4, Section 2 of the Constitution was the beginning of the Fugitive Slave Act, “… No person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but shall be delivered upon the Claim
