Period 4 Hair Lab: Dyed vs. Natural Hair Introduction In the world of today, dyeing hair is something not so uncommon. In fact, it has become so widespread as to be reflected by a verifiable statistic of over 50% of American women or teenagers dyeing their hair in 2005. It has been a long withstanding view that somehow the chemicals in the hair dye affect the hair negatively, causing it to weaken and damaging it. It is with this supposed adverse effect of dyeing hair that this experiment was instigated, and although the consequences of dyeing hair are not very ubiquitously known, it is of utmost importance concerning the investigation this lab has carried out. Research Question: What is the effect of chemical hair dye on the breaking force of hair? Variables Independent Variable: The application of chemical hair dye (dyed hair/non-dyed hair) By comparing and contrasting hair that is dyed with hair that is in its natural state, one can see the effect of dye on the breaking force of hair. Dependent Variable: The breaking force of hair in Newton (N) Controlled Variable: * Application of same force to break the hair * Differing forces can affect the breaking force of the hair, so every hair sample was snapped by pulls of approximately the same force. * Length of hair (10cm) * Differing lengths can affect the breaking force, whether it is requiring more force with longer hair or less force with shorter hair. In order to prevent this from happening, all hair samples were trimmed to 15 cm and attached to the hook with a loop of 10 cm to pull on. * Dryness of Hair (Dry) * If the hair is wet, there is a possibility of requiring a different breaking force for the hair to snap. In order to keep up with the consistency of hair samples, all hair collected were made sure to be dry. * Gender (Female) * It is a possible
