Saying "bless you" allegedly stops the devils from entering since they thought that no demon could stay in a place that a Christian has blessed. 2. A pot stirred counter-clockwise brings bad luck to those who ate the contents and this also caused the spoilage of food. 3. The seventh son of the seventh son is believed to have supernatural powers.
Early settlers had a variety of reasons for seeking a new homeland. The Pilgrims of Massachusetts were spiritual, self-disciplined English people who wanted to escape religious persecution. Other colonies, such as Virginia, were founded principally as business ventures. Colonists viewed America as a place they could go to practice their religion freely. However, most people looked badly upon religions outside of their own.
How did people explain the plague and how did they treat its victims? What roles did science and the Church play? Most believed the plague was a punishment and was God’s way of wiping out mankind. Victims of the plague were “treated” many different ways but because of the lack of medical technology the plague was untreatable. Science didn’t have much of a role although there were a few attempts at learning more about the plague.
In Housekeeping, Robinson uses biblical allusions to convey what she believes are the essential qualities of a dedicated, moral Christian. Both in Housekeeping and in the story of Noah’s Ark, the floods symbolize washing away immorality. The inhabitants of Fingerbone are portrayed as hypocrites for claiming to be Christian, but acting unchristlike regarding transients. When the city floods, “…the houses and hutches and barns and sheds of Fingerbone were like so many spilled and foundered arks” (61). The water represents cleansing, so whereas in the bible the sinners drown in the flood, in the novel they receive the worst of the water damage.
They believed that such spirits came from Purgatory, the vaguely located place between heaven and hell where the “souls” of those who in life were not good enough to go directly to heaven, and not bad enough to deserve hell, went to be cleansed of their sins and so made fit to enter heaven. “Purgatory” comes from Latin purgo, which means to cleanse or purify. It was “a place of temporary suffering and expiation” (Concise Oxford Dictionary).
While many people may have thought that this film was just a beautiful love story between Rick and Ilsa, most did not know that its true meaning was much more significant than that. This was an early war film released in 1942 when citizens all over Europe were fleeing from the Nazis. At this time, most Americans were not too excited about the idea of entering the war to help the fight against the Nazis. Hollywood noticed this and they ended up making Casablanca, which was a pro-interventionist film to try and get Americans to support the war. Throughout this paper I will explain how Casablanca was a pro-interventionist film and how its main character, American nightclub owner Rick, changed his ways.
I am here to talk to you today about the death of Romeo and Juliet, and who is to blame for the scandalous death the suspects are Friar Lawrence or Juliet’s nurse. I believe it is Friar Lawrence to blame and I will explain why he is to blame for their deaths throughout this speech. Firstly Friar Lawrence had given Juliet a poison only to stimulate an extreme coma and, to make her breathing and heartbeat slow down. This was chosen to be done therefore a heartbeat can’t be detected but on the other hand Friar Lawrence acted thoughtless, selfish and shockingly. This was a risk that he had given Juliet the sleep like death poison that he had taken a risk.
Holden has proven to hint at the idea that he has been a bit too much influenced by movies, which would most likely be a reason why Allie’s death was such a big deal. The movies have had a role in Holden’s life because they made him to believe that the protagonist or the “good” guy always miraculously survives dire situations, which made him believe that Allie would survive somehow through the leukemia. This idea was hinted towards when Holden was talking about how he felt after Maurice had punched him in the gut, Holden said that he was picturing himself going to the elevator, shooting Maurice, smoking a cigarette, and call up Janet to bandage him up. The idea of the “good” guy winning the battle is a very typical movie type of ending, which points to how influenced Holden is by the movies. The very same type of ending was seen when Holden recalled the movie he watched about the Englishman who had lost his memory and his response to it.
Throughout the Civil War, medical knowledge was extremely basic. Many doctors didn’t understand infection, and those who did, did little or nothing to prevent it. Approximately two thirds of the soldiers died from infections as a result of unsound hygiene and sanitary conditions. Disease was extremely prominent in Civil War camps because of the disgusting conditions that the soldiers had to live in. Even though during the civil war, many medical advancements were being made, they were not being made quick enough to save approximately 400,000 soldiers who died from disease and infection.
Also, when we eavesdrop on something, we don’t hear the whole conversation sometimes and when we retell what we hear, and as it gets passed from person to person, the story becomes different. Perhaps the speaker is saying the same thing here about religion. There are different versions of it but it all refers to a greater being. The second stanza talks about love. The speaker says ‘ we should not fear the spears of the spring nor the city’s yammering fire alarms.’ This means that we should not be afraid of getting hurt when we love because it is inevitable ‘but, as it is, the spears each year go through our flesh.’ In the third stanza, the speaker tells us that in life, there is no right or wrong path.
